The sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm golden light over the carnival grounds. Music drifted through the air, soft, playful tunes mixed with the sound of laughter, chatter, and the occasional ring of a bell from a nearby game booth.
They arrived together, walking through the wide entrance decorated with paper hearts and pastel streamers that fluttered in the breeze.
Brenda led the way, turning heads in a fiery red mini dress that hugged her curves like it was made for her. Her blonde hair spilled down to her shoulders, and her bold red lipstick matched the confident smile on her face.
She had spent extra time getting ready, picking her best dress, and curling her hair just right. And now, she walked a few steps ahead of the others, making sure Alanis had a clear view of her.
She smiled to herself, pretending not to notice if he looked her way, but she was watching.
Brian strolled beside her in a wild, multi-colored shirt that popped against his black trousers. He looked relaxed, his eyes already darting around, eager to explore everything at once.
Harlow followed behind, wearing her favorite faded jeans and an oversized white shirt that swayed gently in the breeze. Her red hair was tied into a ponytail, and she had only added a little lip gloss. She hadn’t dressed up, and she hadn’t planned to enjoy the day. She was only here because Brenda had somehow convinced her to come, and Harlow had dragged Alanis along without thinking too much.
Beside her, Alanis wore his usual black shirt and black trousers, unbothered by the sun casting a glow on his face. His dark clothes made him look out of place, like a shadow in a world of color. Still, he stayed close to Harlow, his gaze quiet but alert, as if he was trying to figure out why he agreed to come in the first place.
He had no idea how Brenda had managed to convince his wife to come here. The Harlow he knows would never agree to it.
It was obvious Harlow really didn’t like the place, but she would do everything to stay as far away from Alanis as possible. She couldn’t look at him, not after the embarrassment of this morning.
She had paraded her unattractive body before his eyes and had ruined the little bond they shared. Alanis couldn’t even look at her to show how irritated he must have felt.
Harlow shivered at her thought, her eyes moistening a little. She should have never fallen for him again. It always ends up the same. Now she loved him, but he didn’t love her anymore.
The scent of popcorn and cotton candy filled the air as the crowd thickened around them. Colorful booths lined the path ahead, offering everything from love-themed games to handmade crafts. The whole place felt like a dream built for couples and wide-eyed romantics.
"Do you want popcorn?" Alanis asked softly, but she shook her head without looking at him. She didn’t want his kindness. She didn’t want to pretend. Not when he couldn’t even look at her this morning. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm
She turned her face away, her hands tucked deep into her pockets.
The awkward exchange didn’t go unnoticed.
Brenda’s eyes lit up as she watched the couple from the corner of her eye. She stepped in quickly with a wide smile.
"Let’s get popcorn, Mr. Hamilton," she said sweetly. Then she turned to Harlow. "You and Brian can go ahead to the game booth. We’ll catch up soon."
Harlow didn’t hesitate. "Sure," she said, already walking away with Brian. And Brenda could only smile. This was her plan all along, she had invited them to the love fest just to spend a little time with Alanis. A little time to make him fall in love with her.
Alanis stared after his wife, confused and frustrated. She was letting someone else take him away? While she hung out with another man?
That wasn’t like her.
What happened to the rules they had set? What happened to the quiet understanding they once shared?
One moment she was soft, warm, open... and now she was cold, distant. Refusing to speak. Refusing to look at him. It was slowly driving him crazy. And he didn’t even know what he had done wrong.
He watched her leave with Brian, all smiley and sweet. She’s never this way with him.
Did she hate him again?
Had she decided to stop loving him... for good?
"Hey, Mr. Hamilton." Brenda tugged on his arm gently. "Let’s get the popcorn and cotton candy from over there."
They walked to the stall where a kind woman smiled at them.
"Two cups of popcorn, please," Brenda said cheerfully.
"Oh, you two look like the perfect couple," the woman said with a twinkle in her eye.
Brenda let out a laugh. "Please stop, ma’am. It’s nothing like that." She sounded playful, brushing it off, but deep down, she liked hearing it. She liked standing next to Alanis. She liked being seen with him.
She couldn’t wait to kick Harlow out for good. That bitch was seriously getting on her nerves.
The woman handed over the popcorn, and Alanis paid quickly. Then they moved to the next stall for cotton candy.
Meanwhile, Harlow and Brian had reached a spooky-looking photo booth. The sign above it read ’Scary Circus Haunted House for Lovers.’ The entrance was dark and covered in red and white curtains. Screams and creepy music drifted from inside.
They both stopped short.
"N... n... no w... way," Brian said, eyes wide. "I’m n... n... not g... g... going in there."
"Me neither," Harlow said, shaking her head. Now more than ever she wished Alanis was here with her.
They watched as other couples stepped inside bravely, writing their names down before disappearing through the curtain.
Brian shifted uncomfortably, then said, "Y-You know... m-my wife... she h-has a thing for y-your husband."
Harlow finally looked at him. Her face was calm, but her eyes were sharp.
"I know," she said. "I saw it the first day I met her. The way she looks at him, it was obvious."
She paused, then added, "I also know that showing up at the diamond shop wasn’t a coincidence. And staying at the farmhouse wasn’t either."
Brian looked down, embarrassed. She wasn’t wrong. Brenda had planned it all. But Harlow had chosen to stay quiet about it, until now.
"D... Do you p... p... plan o... on stay... staying here f... For... forever?" Harlow shook her head.
"We’re only here for a short vacation," she added. "We’re not staying forever."
The man in charge of the booth asked if they were getting in, but both shook their heads quickly.
Brian glanced at Harlow again. He wanted to ask why she was letting Brenda hang out with her husband. Was she tired of Alanis too? Did she want to switch?
The girl looked beautiful, even more beautiful than his wife.
The thought crossed his mind, silly as it was. But he kept it to himself.
Some things were better left unsaid...
