When Alanis and Brenda reached the Scary Clown booth ride, the sight in front of them stopped Alanis cold. His dark eyes stared at his woman laughing, her eyes bright, her smile wide as she stood beside Brian. The laughter that echoed from her lips hit Alanis like a slap. He clenched his jaw, a storm building behind his eyes.

Brenda, on the other hand, looked like a firecracker ready to explode with excitement. Her eyes sparkled, not from the ride, but from the man beside her. She glanced at Alanis and practically bounced.

Brian was the first to notice them. "O-oh... th-they’re b-back," he stammered, clearly flustered. He liked Harlow, he preferred Harlow to his wife.

If only Alanis could switch.

Brenda’s smile faltered for a second, her eyes narrowing at Brian’s slip-up. Embarrassment flickered, but she pushed it down. ’It’s fine,’ she told herself. ’No one here knows I’m married to him. I just need to focus. Alanis is the prize. He’s the only one that matters.’

She turned to Alanis, eyes gleaming. "Oh my God, what is that?!" she shrieked suddenly, flinging herself into his arms like she’d seen a ghost. Her popcorn flew into the air in the most theatrical way.

Alanis frowns, his face tightening. He peeled her arms off him like she was something sticky he couldn’t wait to be rid of.

But Brenda just giggled at his action, as she tried to cover up her shame. She leaned closer again, whispering, "I’m such a scaredy-cat Mr Hamilton. You should always protect me."

In her books, men are often attracted to weak women so acting that way would always be her winning him over.

Alanis didn’t even look at her. His gaze was still locked on Harlow, waiting, hoping... for something. Anything. A reaction. A flicker of jealousy. A scowl. Care, dammit. Care.

If only she’d just show a little concern.

But Harlow only glanced at him, expression unreadable, then looked away like he didn’t exist.

That hollow ache in his chest deepened. She was really going to keep playing this game?

Harlow stepped up to the man registering names. "Hi, I think we’re ready to go in now."

Alanis moved instinctively toward her, but Brenda quickly latched onto Brian’s arm, dragging him forward like an unwilling puppet.

"Y-you want us to go in too, Harlow?" she asked with a fake sweetness that made Alanis’s skin crawl.

Harlow nodded with a polite smile. "Of course."

"B-but I’m scared... i... I can’t go in there." Brenda pouted, clearly fishing for sympathy.

"Then you can wait out here. We’ll be back soon," Harlow said, not missing a beat.

But Brenda wasn’t backing down that easily.

"But... you need a partner, right? And Brian wants to go too. I can’t say no to him." Brenda clicked her tongue and gave Brian a small shove.

Harlow smiled, eyes glinting. "Alright." She turned to the man to add their names.

Brenda pounced again. "Wait! Since Brian and I are scared, maybe it’d be better to... switch partners?" She glanced at Alanis coyly. "That way we all ride smoothly."

Alanis narrowed his eyes.

"Mrs. Hamilton," Brenda cooed, "you and Brian make such a perfect match. And Alanis and I... we’d make an even better team."

Alanis looked at his wife, praying, begging, for a different response this time.

But once again, she didn’t hesitate.

"That’s a perfect idea," Harlow said sweetly and took Brian’s hand like it meant nothing.

Alanis felt something snap inside. "Are you sure you can go in alone?" His eyes were on her and she smiled.

"Of course. It’s nothing." Harlow

Brenda practically squealed as she wrapped her arm around Alanis and tugged him toward the ride. "Let’s go, partner!" she chirped, her body pressing into his side.

Inside the haunted attraction, Harlow gripped Brian’s hand as skeletons flew from coffins and mechanical screams echoed in the dark. She wasn’t even sure why she was so scared, these things weren’t real. But her nerves were on edge, and her mind kept drifting to Alanis.

Was Brenda clinging to him like she always does? Was he letting her? Were they alone in some corner now... kissing?

A twinge of jealousy stabbed her, sharper than she expected but she brushed it off.

It’s not like Alanis loved her anymore.

"I... I... it’s just a... a... all toys, w... we can d... d... do this." Brian said trying to sound encouraging and Harlow nodded.

"H... H... Hurry, let’s g... g... go." Brian said as he moved forward and Harlow followed suit. As they almost reached the door, a skeleton flew out of the casket and, "Ahh." Harlow screamed and quickly held Brian who looked like he was shaking in his pants too.

"I... I... It’s n... nothing." He opened the door and they walked into the next room.

Meanwhile, Alanis was living through his own personal nightmare.

Brenda clung to him like a leech, screaming at every flicker of light, every creak of the ride, rubbing her chest against his arm like it was an accident, over and over again.

By the hundredth time, Alanis had had enough.

"Stop touching me that way," he growled, yanking his arm away. "You’re not scared, and we both know it."

Brenda blinked up at him, feigning innocence. "What are you talking about, Mr. Hamilton?"

Alanis didn’t want to say a word before because it was all his crazy wife’s idea that Brenda rode with him, but he couldn’t take it anymore. Who says she gets to make decisions for him?

"Then you must know that I’m in love with you," Brenda said calmly. There was no need to hide her feelings anymore, they were alone and together like she wanted. She had Alanis right where she wanted him.

"I’ve been in love with you since the first day I met you." She stepped closer, her bouncing boobs pressing against his chest. It was no news Brenda is sexy and beautiful. She’s the type of woman any man would want, but not Alanis.

"I might not be as smart as your wife, or half as accomplished as she is. But I know I’m better at pleasing you, Mr Hamilton." She poked his chest with her index fingers as she traced it down his body, going lower when Alanis caught her hands. Brenda stared at him.

"No thank you," Alanis said and started walking away.

"I’ve seen the way she treats you. You need someone better. Someone to love and appreciate you." Alanis smiled at her confession.

"You don’t know me, how can you fall in love with me?" Alanis stared at her.

"I don’t have to know you to fall in love with you. I love you and that’s all that matters." Alanis turned to her fully now, eyes burning.

"I don’t like desperate women," He said flatly and Brenda paled. As Alanis was about to step out, she hurriedly grabbed his hands.

"Alanis, I know you think we’re not compatible because I’m married. I can always divorce Brian whenever I want and you can do the same with that woman." She said desperately.

"I would do whatever you want. I’m ready to please you all day every day." She added but Alanis looked so uninterested in her words.

"I don’t like cheap women. I love to chase. Easy women repel me." He said and opened the last curtain as he stepped out.
