Seven years had passed like a breeze. Just like that, they were gone, and Alanis was still searching for the one woman he could never forget.
He hadn’t given up. He would never give up, even if it meant searching for her forever. Every month since he woke from his coma, he kept seeing their movie everywhere, the story of him and Harlow.
Even though he had read the manuscript, the film was different. It showed all the pain Harlow had been through. Everything she had endured... because of him.
Now, he understood why she could never forgive him.
He had been cruel. A monster. If he couldn’t forgive himself, how could he blame Harlow for walking away?
She had every right to leave.
Alanis ran his fingers through his hair and let out a long, tired breath.
He had asked everyone close to her, he even threatened Richie, Edward, and Elena. He had them kidnapped and tortured, but none of them said a word. It seemed Harlow hadn’t told anyone where she went.
He had even spoken to her best friend Lola. He had spoken with Andrew, and everyone else she might have trusted. But no one had seen or heard from his wife.
This time, she had really left, just like she promised she would.
While Alanis sat in his dark office, wondering where Harlow might be, hoping that the new detectives he hired would finally find her, someone stepped into the room.
The polished shoes stopped at the entrance. The man had brown hair neatly combed to the side and his head held high. In his arms was a small boy. His son, born from the woman he had once rejected.
George.
After years of fighting his own demons, George was finally holding his son. He never married the sex worker, even after their grandmother threatened him. Instead, he made a deal with the woman. She was to leave their son with him while he paid her a huge amount of money to never show her face again.
He had already lost Claudia and their child, he wasn’t going to lose this one too.
George walked into his brother’s office, a proud smile on his face. He looked like a father who had finally found purpose. So different from the useless man people once knew.
His once sharp features were now hidden behind a thick beard. He had put on weight from the happiness of raising his child. His round belly was the first thing anyone noticed.
"Hello, big brother," George greeted, slightly out of breath. He had been by Alanis’s side these past years, helping rebuild the company together.
He had learned from his mistakes. Fighting his brother was never really his fight, it was their selfish mother’s dream. And look how she ended up.
George didn’t want to be like her. He was tired of the conflict. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
He couldn’t run the company alone, and if it collapsed, it would hurt him too. So working with Alanis was the smarter path.
"What are you doing here?" Alanis asked coldly. His voice echoed through the dim office. It was hard to tell if it was day or night in there. George had lost count of how many days Alanis had locked himself in.
The room was as dark as his heart since Harlow left.
No one knew why she had left. Neither Alanis nor Charlotte ever spoke about it.
George let out a sigh. "Still so cold and distant. Cheer up, Alanis, before your bad mood rubs off on Liam." He pulled his son close. Liam’s big, curious eyes met his uncle’s cold gaze, and the little boy quickly hid behind his father.
Alanis’s gaze lingered on the little boy. Liam looked a little older than his Alex. Everyday Liam reminds him of how much he had been a despicable father and husband.
He wondered if Harlow had a child already. Was she comfortable? Had she met someone else?
Was she already married to someone else? Alanis gritted his teeth at his thoughts.
He couldn’t imagine that, though a part of him wanted her to be happy, he would never allow her move on without him.
If this was his punishment, the universe sure do know how to make him mad.
"Today is ’Take Your Son to Work’ day," George explained. "So I brought Liam along."
"Liam, say hi to your uncle." George nudged the boy forward. Liam waved shyly.
He seemed cautious around his uncle. One moment Alanis is the sweetest uncle in the world and the next he’s a ticking time bomb. The little boy has known to be aware of this and avoid him whenever he’s in a terrible mood.
He has even caught his uncle so many times being sad and though he has asked his father why his uncle Alanis is always sad, George had nothing to say.
But beneath the fear was a curiosity that Liam had for his uncle.
"Hi, Uncle Alanis," he said softly.
"Come on, let’s spend some time with your uncle. Today’s going to be fun, I promise." George sat down while Liam slowly walked toward Alanis. Without hesitation, Alanis lifted the boy onto his lap.
Liam had shown him what being a father felt like again. It reminded him of holding Alex.
"Have you heard from Lia?" George asked. Alanis shook his head slightly as he reached for a jar of candy hidden in his drawer. Since Lia left seven years ago, no one knew about her whereabouts to this day.
Now Alanis thought of it, he wondered how his sister was doing. He has tried to call her a few times, but for some reason he cannot reach her.
Lia had said she would return once she has healed completely, but seven years seem like a really long time to heal. Maybe she didn’t want to come back and has somehow adapted to the life out there. Alanis would be glad if his sister has moved on and has found happiness.
He would need to hire a few private investigators to find her to be sure she hadn’t committed suicide like she planned before.
Another knock was heard on the door. "Come." Alanis said and the knob twisted for Gus to step in. Seven years has really changed everyone including Gus who seemed to be married with two children.
The only person that still remained the same after seven years is his boss. The one who has not stopped looking for his madam.
"Boss." Gus greeted with a smile.
"What do you have for me?" Alanis asked.
"The detectives finally sent a message to the companies email." Alanis narrowed his eyes at his assistant. He was excited at the same time scared. If the detectives finally find his wife, what would he say to her?
For the first time, he was scared of seeing Harlow again. He knew she would obviously reject him again, but the questions, ’What if’ kept ringing in his mind.
What if she’s with someone else?
What if she’s already married and living well?
What will he do?
"Detectives? You’re still searching for that woman?" George snapped. His voice was full of anger. Of course, he was mad. Alanis was still chasing a woman who, in his eyes, had destroyed everything.
’That woman’ is my wife, George," Alanis said firmly.
"Your wife?" George scoffed. "What kind of wife runs away from her home? A home where she was treated like a queen?"
"What kind of woman leaves her husband when he needs her the most? You were fighting for your life and a woman you sacrificed everything for was out there ruining your reputation!" He yelled.
"You gave her everything, Alanis. You trusted her with our entire inheritance. And this is how she thanks you?"
"I don’t know what kind of twisted love you two had, but for the sake of our family, you need to stay away from her."
"It’s not enough," Alanis said quietly. "What she did is nothing compared to what I did to her." He turned to Gus. "What did the email say?"
"It’s the same, boss. There’s no trace of anyone named Harlow Blackwood anywhere. The pictures you sent haven’t been seen anywhere," Gus said.
"Well, that’s that," George snapped. "You’ve hired over seventeen detectives and investigators. If she was out there, they would have found her by now. Don’t you think she’s dead already?"
"Maybe her karma caught up to her." He said.
"It’s time to move on, Alanis. Find someone else. It’s been seven years. If she wanted to be found, she would have been."
"Oh! The Lincoln family is hosting their daughter’s debut party tonight. Lots of young women will be there. You should come. I’ll be there too, looking for a bride."
"You know Liam needs a mother. Our mother’s in prison, and grandma’s too old to take care of him."
"No, thank you," Alanis cut him off.
