A week had passed since their visit to the amusement park. The holiday was over, and Alex was back in school.
That morning, Lia had dropped Alex off on her way out, leaving her brother and sister-in-law alone in the mansion. She hoped, just like Alanis had promised, that he’d be able to win Harlow back.
But if Harlow found out he had lied again... there would be no forgiveness this time.
Now, seated at the long dining table, Harlow sat across from the man who hadn’t stopped watching her since breakfast began.
She kept her expression calm. If there was one thing Harlow had mastered, it was hiding her feelings. But inside, she was crumbling. His gaze tore through every layer of her self-control.
She had told herself that her love for Alanis had died the day she left Halkhalls. But the truth? There hadn’t been a single day she hadn’t thought of him. Not one.
Especially because of how she had left.
Seeing him alive and well now, just with a memory he couldn’t find, shouldn’t have made her feel anything. But it did. A small part of her was relieved. A small, aching part still cared.
Alanis, on the other hand, couldn’t take his eyes off her. She was still the same Harlow. If anything, she had become even more distant. More guarded. Cold.
He wondered what was going through her mind. He wondered if he still had a chance.
He had been terrified she had moved on. But Lia told him no man had ever gotten close. Harlow had turned down every single one. She had kept her heart locked away.
That thought made his chest tighten. But how much longer would she stay alone? Harlow was stunning. Beautiful in a way that could steal the breath from any man. Someone would try to take her away again. He could feel it.
He gritted his teeth at the idea.
"There are so many beautiful designs to admire here, Mr. Hamilton," she said, her voice sharp but calm, breaking the silence.
"I was wondering..." Alanis started, and for a second, those stunning green eyes met his. God, he missed those eyes. The curiosity that always danced in them used to drive him crazy.
"Wondering?" she echoed when he fell silent.
"What really happened between us? Were we married? How did we have a son?" he asked quietly.
"You’ll need to regain your memory to answer that yourself," she replied flatly.
"Are you always this cold?" he asked, trying to smile despite the chill in her voice.
"Like I said, Mr. Hamilton. Your questions will be answered when your memory returns," she said without looking up.
"I must have been a very terrible person for you to hate me like this." Alanis said calmly.
"Who says I hate you?" Harlow asked.
"I would really appreciate it if you can tell me what our relationship used to be like. I’m tired of being in the dark." Alanis said.
"Our relationship isn’t what you think it was, Mr. Hamilton," she said softly, lying through her teeth.
"It was just a one-night stand where we agreed never to see each other again." frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
Alanis’s heart sank.
"Then why do you live with my sister? How did you know her?" His voice turned cold, hard.
Harlow’s eyes narrowed. There it was. The lie. The manipulation. Just like before. He was lying again.
Did he really think she was a fool?
"I knew it. You’ve been lying this whole time. You never lost your memory." She smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes.
"What was I supposed to do?" he asked, his voice dropping. "Lying was the only way I could get close to you, and Alex."
"You have no idea how much I missed you. How many nights I stayed awake thinking of you..."
She didn’t move. Didn’t blink.
"I’ve searched the world for you," he added softly.
"Our deal was clear," she said. "You’d leave once your memory came back. But clearly, it never left. Pack your bags, Alanis. Get out of my house." Alanis was silent for a moment, then he spoke again.
"What do you want me to do?" he whispered. "Tell me what I need to do to earn your forgiveness. Punish me. Hurt me all you want. Do to me what I did to you." Harlow stared at him, then shook her head.
"You want to go through what I went through?" She asked. "You’ll never even live through the first stage." She added.
"But if you insist. You’ll need to get pregnant first," she said with a soft, dangerous smile, "and then get into a fatal accident... one bad enough to lose the baby."
Alanis froze.
"But that’s just the beginning," she continued. Her voice cracked, but she pushed through.
"You try to call me, the only person you have left, but I won’t answer. I’ll be too busy with the woman I love."
Her voice shook now.
"Then you wake up to find our son is dead. His heart disease had killed him, after so many attempts of trying to reach you for months and tell you about it."
A tear slipped down her cheek.
"You’re still grieving when you see me again, with her. You call me a liar even when I try to explain to you."
Another tear.
"Then you find out you’re still pregnant. And that you only had a miscarriage for one of the twin."
Her voice broke completely.
"You bury your son alone. No one knows. No one cares. Except Grandma."
She was crying now, her hands shaking.
"You come back to sign the divorce papers... and my family kills you."
She lifted her head, eyes full of pain.
"When you’ve lived through all that, I’ll forgive you."
She stood and turned to walk away, but Alanis grabbed her hand.
"I’m sorry," he said, from the bottom of his soul. Both knees on the floor as he apologized. He had seen it it happen over and over again, he has heard it, but he never knew it was this severe.
Harlow laughed. It was sharp and bitter.
"I wish that was enough, Alanis. But even if you die, I won’t forgive you for what you did."
Alanis’s eyes burned, but he nodded. Harlow deserves to hate him, he had been despicable. No punishment will be enough for him in this lifetime. Maybe he’s better off dead. " I’ll go now," he whispered.
"Take good care of Alex." Harlow’s eyes burned at his words, but her heart stung harder than her eyes.
Before Alanis could move, Harlow’s phone rang, cutting through the tension like a blade.
She looked down at the screen to see it was Lia.
Why was she calling at this time?
She answered.
"Harlow, where are you?" Lia’s voice was frantic. "I just got a call from Alex’s school. He collapsed. They’ve rushed him to the hospital."
