The Kingmaker System-Chapter 101 - 100. Welcome Home (1)
Chapter 101: 100. Welcome Home (1)
[Congratulations. The host has earned a new title.
Guardian Dragon of Mordino.]
[The Kingmaker System congratulates the Host for successfully fulfilling the quest of rescuing the Kingdom of Mordino and choosing the first Monarch.]
The first thing that I read when I opened my eyes after two days of sleep was this.
I wasn’t expecting the system’s appreciation for my hard work.
[*** Of *** congratulates you on successfully completing the quest and wishes you best for your future endeavours.]
"Ah, it’s you whose name I can’t know." I thought.
[*** Of *** has taken a special interest in you and they request to look after you.]
[Will you accept *** Of *** to be your Patron?]
[Goddess of Wisdom asks *** Of *** to not steal their candidate.]
[*** Of *** clarifies that they are not stealing anyone.]
I ignored the bickering going in the background and sighed as I was in the carriage that was currently taking me back home.
Another one and a half month before I could finally be back home. Fortunately, I would be there on time and wouldn’t miss Rune’s birthday.
[*** Of *** asks whether you wish to accept their Patronage or not.]
"Give me some time to think." I answered, "Besides, it’s safer to not accept help from strangers."
[*** Of *** says that if you accept their Patronage then you would be able to know who they are.]
"Hm... Interesting, I’ll think about it."
My stomach grumbled and I turned in my seat, it was a good and comfortable carriage so, I was able to lie down with Lyall, Remi and Roan sitting in front of me.
"Get up and eat something." Roan said and I groaned turning in my seat feeling my stomach grumbling again.
"I’ll eat in my dream."
"That won’t do you any good, get up and eat this sandwich." Roan spoke and I covered my head with the cloak that was over me.
"Oi, get up already. You’ve been sleeping for two days straight."
I felt him rip the cloak off of me making me groan even more.
"Ugh..."
Usually when I would be busy with work I wouldn’t feel the need to sleep but now that I had some free time it seemed like my body was starting to demand rest.
"It’s not good to skip meals, Master." Remi added.
"Eat something and then go to sleep!" Roan commanded and I sighed before pushing myself off of the seat.
The carriage was stopped for a few minutes as everyone took a break for eating, it wasn’t until I started eating that I realised how hungry I was.
I scarfed down ten sandwiches along with some soup and the roasted bird which they brought from the forest.
"Ah, I feel so full. I might not need food for the next three days!" I groaned while stretching as I made my way back to the carriage stifling a yawn with Remi beside me.
"Are you a sloth? Or a bear? Eat and sleep like a normal person." Roan chided.
"Yes, yes." I mumbled as I got on the carriage followed by Remi.
I lied down on the soft seat and heard the sounds from outside.
"Mr Roan?" It was Lyall.
"What?"
"I appreciate the fact that you are worried about Master but your way of talking is too disrespectful." Lyall’s words seemed like sharp sword cutting through ice.
"Disrespectful? I am acting the way I always do."
"That’s the root cause then,"
"Hah?"
"Your attitude," Lyall stated, "it needs to be changed while you are addressing Master directly. If you can’t do that then there’s no need for something like you to be taken along."
"You don’t get to decide that. Ocean was the one who chose me to go along so, butt out!" frёewebnoѵēl.com
"I guess, I should really teach you how to behave well with others. Your attitude is more like the uncouth brutes."
"What did you just say?" Roan growled.
Remi who was listening along grew concerned and started to stand up but I reached out holding his wrist.
"Let them be."
"B-But they’re going to fight."
"It’s fine, they’re big boys. Don’t worry." I assured him and he sat stiffly in his seat.
I knew sooner or later they would end up fighting, and I also knew Lyall was capable of wiping the floor with Roan. It was a waste of time but, I wasn’t complaining.
The two returned to the carriage making Remi gasp and I could smell blood on both of them, I didn’t have to check who won.
"Open the windows, you guys reek of blood." I mumbled with my eyes closed and Lyall obliged immediately.
For the rest of the journey, Roan attempted to be respectful towards me under Lyall’s watchful eye.
But, regardless, his fiery temper would always kick in and he would start acting out.
I received the regular news of the Mordino’s condition as how they were reforming themselves again and the new Queen was going to be coronated soon. The Tyrant’s head was chopped off and was put on a spike right at the town center for everyone to see.
Miri took my advice and this happened in only two days with a public trial. The Tyrant’s crimes were brought to light and the people who were termed as traitors or criminals finally got justice and their rightful honor.
"Will you be visiting for the coronation ceremony of Her Highness, Master?" Lyall asked.
"Don’t know, she will want me to be there but it’ll attract a lot of attention if the Queen and a person of Sestia is close."
"But, she seems to like you." I smiled.
"Yes, she’s cute but now she has to navigate her life on her own. Like Davian."
Lyall looked at me as I mentioned Davian. We didn’t have to talk much about him as in our case the Chapter with Davian was closed. There wasn’t any need to see him until in future when I would feel the need to.
It was quite a peaceful journey but I couldn’t have said that when we reached at the Frosthail. There were festivities going over there.
The news about the Lord of the North returning with his lost parents had reached the kingdom and now the fame of Montaire family had kicked up several times than it already was.
The Imperial family had to announce it for the sake of their reputation and there was also going to be a huge banquet in celebration of the return of the Heroes who not only returned safely but also became an integral part for the Mordino kingdom’s revolution.
This must have made the Golden Serpent and King turn green with envy but it was still an overall good news as it was being assumed that Mordino would now side with Sestia and Denril might lose the war.
I didn’t try to influence Miri about this war thing, it would be better if she started to make her decisions on her own objectivy. Though, I would have to look into this ongoing troublesome war once I had returned home.
I released a deep sigh making Roan look at me.
"Is there something wrong,... Master?" He was still awkward.
"The prospect of more work in future makes me feel tired already." I answered making him tilt his head to one side.
"Don’t tell me you’re going to wage another war." He joked with a smile and I sighed again.
"Apparently, I would have to go for this ongoing war."
"A-Another war?" Remi gasped.
Roan’s expression turned deadpan and he massaged his temples.
"Are you a war junkie?"
"It’s not like I love wars or anything. But with a war going around, I couldn’t live peacefully." I answered.
"How will you stop this war anyways? By killing the King again?"
"I wish." Roan’s expression turned funny and I chuckled.
"I am an assassin but I don’t go around killing people unless there’s a need to."
Roan didn’t look convinced but I left it at that, I would have an earful from someone else if I told them that I was planning to meddle with the war between Sestia and Denril. Silas wouldn’t let me hear the end of it and I didn’t even want to think of how Father and Rune would react.
It had been over six months that I had left home and they couldn’t stay in touch with me. I missed them but I was relieved knowing that they were safe and doing well in my absence.
"Mr Lyall, what’s that white thing?" I heard Remi ask.
"White thing?" Roan mumbled and looked out along with Remi.
"Whoa... This place is filled with snow!" Roan shouted.
"Snow!" Remi gasped.
The temperature of Mordino was opposite of Frosthail so, it was a given that they would react this way to snow.
"It’s spring so most of the snow must have melted off," I mumbled.
"You mean there’s even more snow than this?" He squeaked.
"This place is called the Frozen Wasteland for a reason, Roan."
"But still, that much snow isn’t a good thing and also those beasts!"
Our carriage continuously came across the shifters and Lyall and I had to take turns to get rid of them. Roan and Remi were shocked to see me handle a group of seven to eight wolves without moving a finger.
"So, you haven’t told me yet," he started and I looked at him.
"Told you what?" I asked and spotted the Teleportation Gate appearing in the distance.
"That-"
"You two might have to brace yourself for this." I warned him and he frowned while Remi looked confused.
"What?"
The carriage passed by the Gate and Remi’s and Roan’s faces turned green, Roan jumped out of the carriage first followed by Remi and they emptied their stomachs make me feel slightly pitiful for them.
"Wha... What the hell was that?" Roan groaned.
"It’s a teleportation gate, it cuts the distance between North and the other regions. Look, we’re already here." I said pointing at the town that lay in front of us.
Roan and Remi stared at the scene before Roan turned to me.
"You should have told me about that beforehand." He snapped.
"Oh, sorry."
I could see a vein popping on his forehead before he breathed deeply and calmed himself.
"What I was asking earlier is, why are you bringing me with you?"
"Oh, that’s because I want to hire you."
I guess I forgot to tell him that.
"Hire me?"
"Yes, your father was a talented person who was responsible for the administrative tasks of the previous King of Mordino, right? And you’ve learned from him."
"Yes, what of that?" He looked a little cautious.
"So, I want to utilise those skills."
"What?"
"Yes, I’m hiring you to look after my organisation and also to become the face of my cause."
"You..." He stared at me for a moment before I looked at Lyall who was helping Remi up to his feet.
"Besides, are you all right now? I need to hurry."
"What’s the hurry?"
"It’s my brother’s birthday, I need to reach in time for the celebrations."
"I didn’t know you had a brother."
"Yes, you don’t know a lot of things, now get in the carriage."
Roan got inside and the carriage started towards the capital.
Lyall was looking at me with the gaze of curiosity, he knew most of the things about Ocean but not the fundamental things like my real identity or my family. With time, I would let him in as in future I couldn’t keep Reina from attending the matters and Ocean would have to stay in shadows.
"How old is your brother?" Roan asked.
"He’s turning 14."
"Wait, how old are you?" He asked.
I didn’t answer that, I usually went with my mental age but for a 32 year old to be brothers with 14 year old... That would be preposterous. I would rather address him as a son instead of a brother.
The carriage stopped just outside the capital and I stepped down with the bag of souvenirs that I had bought along with stuff that would go straight to Silas.
"Eh? You’re not coming along?" Roan asked.
"No, I will fly back to my house from here. Lyall take them to Ryujin mansion and give them rooms there."
"Wait, will you come see us then?" Remi asked.
"Yes, I’ll come, but for now I need to rush. I’m late." I said as I activated my wings and attached the invisibility brooch on.
"Go back safely." I said before I flapped my wings and soared high into the air.
The evening was starting to turn darker as I flew towards the Aurelius mansion, thankfully, it was close by.
I saw the familiar building coming into view, the windows were lit with the warm orange glow of the chandeliers and I could feel the presences of the people from beyond the walls.
"Finally," I sighed as I removed the sapphire earstud from my ear.
I slowed down and landed on the railing of the balcony connected to the drawing room where everyone had gathered.
"No! Reina will be here, she said she will return." I heard Rune’s voice.
"But... It’s so late. She might be here by tomorrow, Young Master." Tobias, our butler said.
"It’s a shame, we all were waiting but, I know she will be here so, it’s fine, Rune." My father said in a low, saddened voice.
"But, she promised that she would come, didn’t she, Uncle Silas?" Rune looked at Silas who sighed and then his head suddenly turned to the window where I was standing.
"Well, she’s not the one to break her promises." He smiled.
He must have sensed the mana. Well, since he did notice me so, I guess I could make an appearance now.
I removed the invisibility spell and opened the windows stepping inside making the heads turn.
"And, if it’s the one made to my brother then, I would have to come on time at any costs." I smiled.
"Happy birthday, brother."
