Chapter 139: 138. Mana And Math

I rushed ahead to see what had made Ruya shout and spotted Silas lying on the ground with a lot of papers strewn around him.

Ruya was about to step over the papers to go to him when I held her wrist.

"Wait, he’ll chew your ear off if you step on that." I said pointing at the papers which had several formulas and some sort of intricate equations.

"But!" She looked at me with a frantic gaze and I patted her shoulder before I brought my hand up and used telekinesis to lift Silas from the ground.

Ruya gasped loudly as she saw him hovering in the air, I flicked my wrist gently and Silas floated over to the sofa. I gently let him down and we walked over to him.

"Archmage? Archmage, are you all right?" Ruya asked gently nudging his shoulder but he lay almost like he was completely out cold.

I almost reeled back as I saw his face, his eyes seemed like they were completely sunken in and his face was so pale that I felt as if I was watching a marble statue instead.

I sighed and placed my hand over his head.

[Activate Supreme Healing.]

I felt my mana whoosh out of me encompassing his body and nourishing the exhausted muscles and organs.

"Bring him something to eat." I told Ruya who quickly got to her feet.

"Yes!"

She hurriedly left the room and I heard Silas groan a little before he opened his eyes, his blue orbs focused on my face and he frowned slightly.

"Reina?" He grumbled.

"Ocean." I corrected and he looked around.

"You were out cold over there on the floor so, I shifted you here." I said and he pushed himself off the sofa in a sitting position pushing his messy hair back in a ponytail.

"I guess, I overworked myself a little." He spoke making me snort.

I walked over and started picking up the papers from the floor and bundled them up before placing them on his massive desk.

"It seems like overwork might just be an understatement to call what you were doing." I commented and he sighed.

Ruya returned with a tray of food and Silas looked at her.

"Archmage, you’re awake!" She cried and he sighed.

"What’s that?" He asked pointing at the tray in her hands.

"I told her to bring you some food." I said and she nodded.

"I’m not hungry." Silas said.

"That doesn’t mean you won’t eat." I said as I walked over and took the tray from her hands.

"I’ll take it from here, Ruya. You can go." I said with a smile and she gave Silas a concerned look before she left.

I walked back to Silas and placed the tray on the table before taking a seat on the chair in front of him.

"Please finish everything and then let’s talk, Uncle Silas." I said and he looked at me.

The dark circles and ashy color were replaced by the healthy skin and I was sure his exhaustion would have also disappeared after that spell.

"You... casted your healing spell on me, didn’t you?" He asked as he picked up the cutlery.

"Yes," I answered and he nodded before he started eating.

I looked around his office and stood up before walking over to see the books that were all around.

He didn’t say anything as I brushed my fingers over the spines of the leather-bound books and read the names. Most of the books were about Magic theory and research related. Some of them were about human psychology and surprisingly, some were about how to understand how a child’s brain worked.

I plucked one of them out and looked at one of the pages that had the bookmark. I saw the highlighted line which said.

"The children below the age of 5 are always open to new knowledge and absorb new information quickly. It is also the age when their magic is unripe and starting to take shape. Some unique individuals who are self-aware can tap into their mana and manifest their magic at that young age and such young individuals can be called "Geniuses" or "Prodigy."

I guess, he had his own ways of trying to settle his curiosity about my bizarre case.

I closed the book and placed it back on the shelf before picking out another. It seemed like every book in this place was read by him, all of those books which were at least around two hundred or so had traces of his touch.

His brain is a storehouse of so much knowledge that it was making me feel slightly envious, I didn’t have enough patience to sit and read all of this, I would rather read what was important and understand what the concepts were instead of reading the other minor parts.

Foolish as it was, I was the kind who would opt for a way which would save time.

"I’m done, let’s talk." I heard Silas said before I hummed placing the book that I was looking over back in its place and went to Silas.

I saw Silas walk over to his desk and pick out two boxes and placed it down in front of me. One of them had the red stone while the other had the small vial with the black fluid. I took a seat on the chair in front of his desk and looked at him.

"I found a few things about these things," he said before picking a bundle and placing it down before me.

"This black liquid is some sort of a potion that forces the body of the one who injests it to expand, it sort of gives them temporary boost of physical strength. To say in simpler terms then it can turn any animal or person into a beast. But it’s also like poison so, once injested the host can have power but it will soon start shutting down the organs and within two hours the host succumbs to death because of his body falling apart." He explained about the vial and I nodded as I picked up the red stone from the box.

"And what about this?"

"It has a similar effect but,"

"But?"

"It’s more dangerous than the fluid." He said before he walked over and took a seat in the chair beside me after turning it to face me.

"We did a few experiments with these two, the host animal that injested that vial died after two hours but the one who injested this stone would go on even after its body died."

"Even after its body died?" I frowned.

"Yes, I had no idea of such a thing that would make a person move even after death except for the..."

"Except for the what?"

"The forbidden magic that was sealed away hundreds of years ago."

Was it like necromancy? The kind of thing that would make people zombies? No wonder, Drac and Clyde looked like they were completely out of it while fighting. They might already be dead or in so much pain that they wanted to die.

"It was particular gruesome to observe the hosts who injested this stone," Silas said pointing at the stone.

"Their bodies seemed to only have one function, destroy or kill. If there were placed against any other animal then they would attack without any stimulus and wouldn’t stop even after the opponent was dead. We placed the two hosts, one who carried this stone and other who injested the vial along with a few other animals and after killing all the other animals those two started fighting amongst themselves."

"Still, there was the side effect that the body which usually cannot withstand that much power all at once made them lose their minds and their brain system to collapse turning them into berserk beasts that only knew how to kill."

"It’s body didn’t stop even after it was dead, it was as if this stone was giving it energy to move."

"Mana is like a life energy too, right?" I mused, "This stone might be the mana stone which was made with only one intent in mind."

I looked at Silas, "And that was destruction."

"I’ve never encountered such a thing in my life so, I’m not sure if I know where it came from. I’ve been looking for it through various books and ancient texts but nothing worth knowing is found yet."

"Is that what you were doing for all this time?"

"Hm? Ah, yes, that and this." He said before he picked the papers that I had piled up earlier and put them in front of me.

"I was trying to decipher the workings of the device that you told me about. But just like the existence of these stones, I couldn’t find the origin of it."

"Do you need all these mathematical equations to decipher it?" I asked looking at the mind-boggling numericals scribbled all over the papers.

"Yes," Silas said, "Being able to perform magic is one thing but studying about it is completely different. Each being, each life form is connected by two types of energies, Mana and Aura. Both topics are vast on their own. It’s easier to say that one can use Mana just because they have the innate ability but studying those functions and how it affects and travels in the atmosphere and nature is worth studying as well."

I listened as Silas explained me about how math was the language with which one could understand how the dynamics between mana and the universe worked and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of deja vu from my maths classes from my past life.

In my past life, science was a vital factor in people’s lives and here it was magic but strangely enough, the basic language of both of these contrasting factors was the same. Math.

Also, despite the fact that, I couldn’t deny the importance of the math, I still disliked it with passion.

I would rather depend on a simpler approach to mana than use math.

"So, do you understand now?" Silas asked and I smiled nodding.

"Yes, I understand." I lied.
