The Kingmaker System-Chapter 140 - 139. People With Potential (1)
Chapter 140: 139. People With Potential (1)
After giving me a brief explanation about how math was necessary for understanding mana and stuff Silas started telling me about the strange device.
"I am trying to understand what principle it works on but except for these words there’s nothing else." Silas said and I hummed.
"Maybe the device was something inside those pillars." I mumbled.
"I will ask the Mages over there to investigate and let me know about whatever they find." Silas said and I nodded suddenly recalling my other motive of visiting him.
"Ah, right. I almost forgot." I said as I pulled out the envelope from my vest and handed it to him.
"What’s this?" Silas asked as he frowned.
"An Imperial Order." I answered making his frown to deepen before he opened it carefully and started reading the contents.
His frown eased but he massaged his temples and placed the letter down.
"You got it done then." He spoke and I smiled.
"My Father did." I corrected making him look at me.
"I guess, you have a knack for this."
"For what?"
"Making use of people the way you want."
"You make me sound bad, you know Uncle?" I said in a whiny tone making the corners of his lips twitch.
"I meant it in a good way, you can bring out the potential in the most useless people as well."
"Was that for my father?" I asked feeling slightly offended.
"No, I mean in general. No wonder, that old man adores you so much. He wanted his hier to have qualities like you so he must be content by having you at his side." Silas said and I smiled.
"You two aren’t much different, you know?" I said making him frown.
"What do you mean?"
"You both- well, including me as well, see people only for their value. If a person shows potential then we can invest, if not then, they’re useless. But I guess, unlike you and Grandfather, I can give them a chance to look for their potential before using them. Unlike you, I see their future use before taking them in."
Silas stared at me for a moment before releasing a deep sigh, "So, I guess, I and my father didn’t see the potential that you and your mother saw in Duke Aurelius."
I smiled, "I don’t know about mother but I do see great potential. If he is shown the right direction then he can create miracles. Just like this one."
I picked up the Imperial order and waved it in his face.
"Did you ever think that my father would be capable of manipulating both the King and the Queen?"
"That’s your brain." Silas pointed out.
"But it was still Father who did it, didn’t he?"
Silas sighed as he knew there was no way of winning this conversation over.
"Anyways, now you can officially start the work of the Magic Gate so, don’t think of this for a while." I said pointing at the numerical analysis of the device that he was researching over.
Silas sighed again running his hand through his hair, "I won’t be able to but, I guess I have no choice since I’ve hit numerous dead ends."
"And, take a few breaks while working, Uncle. You scared poor Ruya to death." I chuckled.
He shook his head, "I don’t even know how I ended up passing out like that."
I looked at him as his eyes wandered over and fixed on the Imperial order letter noticing his age slowly starting to show signs over his skin.
"Working is good but, I hope you know this one thing, Uncle." I said making him look at me as I stood up.
"Amongst all the people whom I am using, you’re the one with infinite potential. Better than all of them so, I wish you wouldn’t waste your body, it’s fine if you get a bit late, I’ll accomodate accordingly but I wouldn’t be able to do anything if anything happens to you. I hope you understand that."
He stared at me and I smiled patting his shoulder twice before I stepped away from him.
"Well, that’s all I was here for. I have some work pending so, I’ll take my leave now." I said as I walked up to the platform.
"See you around, Uncle." I waved at him before getting on the elevator platform.
"Reina?" He called before I could activate it and I looked at him.
"Hm?"
He didn’t say anything and just shook his head, "It’s nothing. Go back safely."
I nodded and activated the elevator, the platform moved and started descending and it was just a glimpse but I could sweat that I saw a smile on Silas’s face.
He usually never displayed any emotions but, I guess even he was changing with time.
The next day, I was off to Herot city. It was basically a downtown gray area which just like the other black market bases was left alone by the monarch and officials. Though, at the moment, the place seemed quite silent as if it was a dead town.
I walked up to the inn where Lyall was living and handling things from. I had left Lyall to watch over things in that place for over a month that I felt a bit guilty now. I didn’t have time to reach back to see how he was doing.
But speaking of him then, I knew it would take a lot to do him any damage still what I was met after reaching there was beyond my imagination.
"What is he doing here?" I asked pointing at the kid who was standing behind Lyall.
Lyall cleared his throat as I looked at the kid whose face was halfway covered by the hood and he stood with his head down. I couldn’t see his face but his presence said it all.
"He just showed up one day and said he wanted to work with us." Lyall answered.
"And you accepted him?" I asked crossing my arms at my chest.
"No, it was because he ended up saving us from an ambush."
"An ambush?" I cocked my brow and Lyall gulped.
"I apologise for not reporting back, but a few days ago there was an ambush, the enemy was unknown and this kid helped us take care of the situation without letting any casualties on our side."
"And why was I not reported?"
Lyall hung his head, "I..."
I ran my hand through my hair and sighed as I looked at the kid.
"Why are you here? I thought you were dead." I said looking at Drac who was shockingly enough, standing in front of me alive and a little bit different.
"I thought I was going to die too..." He replied, his voice sounded better than last time.
"Are you here with the motive of revenge or something?" I asked and he shook his head.
"No! I... I’ll explain everything to you..." He stuttered.
"After you destroyed that stone in my body, I felt my consciousness returning... Clyde was dead so, I couldn’t do anything for him... I managed to run away from there. But... strangely enough, I... I fell into a deep hole and then ended up in an underground lake."
The mention of underground lake made my eyebrows twitch as I had been to a similar lake before and felt the strange sensation about that place.
"I thought I’d finally die but even then I didn’t die and... ended up getting healed and after watching what was going on in Mordino, I decided to come to you since... there’s no one else who would accept me. And also because you... Well... You made me like this..."
I listened to Drac’s explanation and cocked my brow when he moved.
He slowly lifted the hood and removed his cloak before he lifted his face making my eyes go wide as I saw his face. Unlike the hybrid Dragon kind of face that I had seen before, he seemed more human now. His face was like a normal human guy and even his body had lost the traces of his red dragon scales.
What the hell happened to him?! And did he say it was because of me?! I wondered to myself and the system answered it for me.
[Lesser Dragons after receiving a blessing from a Pureblood Dragon or the Descendant of the Pureblood Dragon can gain strength and are able to change their appearance.
In your case, the Lesser Dragon received your blessing thus, accepting you as his Master and Lord.]
I couldn’t help but stare at his face which didn’t have any hint of him being a Dragon anymore.
He gained my blessing? When did I bless him? I almost killed him.
"Wait, I didn’t turn you like that. I simply destroyed that stone that made you and Clyde berserk. I almost killed you."
Drac shook his head, "That stone was the reason that I was dying, Master. By destroying it, you gave me another chance to live."
I sighed exasperatedly as he looked at me with his amber eyes glistening with hope and anticipation and I couldn’t help but suddenly catch something about what he said.
"That stone..." I mumbled and looked at him, "Do you know what it is?"
Drac looked a little hesitant, "I don’t know what it was, but His Majesty said that since I and Clyde were useless to do things on our own so, that stone would put us to good use."
Now that I looked at him clearly, he seemed like a kid who was in his late teens and probably with no place to go and a troublesome bloodline.
"I-I’ll do anything that you order me, I-I’ll be your slave for life so, please... don’t throw me away." He pleaded and I couldn’t help but sigh as I looked at him.
I had numerous humans from various backgrounds working for me, I had even sheltered elves and dwarves for God’s sake so, why not this kid who had no place left?
[Giver of Gifts wonders what you will do.]
[Goddess of Wisdom supports whatever decision you’ll make.]
[Defender of Divine Glory waits to hear what you decide as the fate of the child.]
