Chapter 63: 62. I’m Not God (3)

The Winter Solstice ball was a kind of a festival where every person of North celebrated their identity as Northerners, being protected by the family of Montaire it seemed like a fairy tale like affair.

The Frosthail castle as well as the towns and markets were decorated with the theme of the snowy landscape and the beautiful snowflakes making one think that maybe they were transported inside a beautiful snow globe.

The slate gray sky paired with the white landscape and the establishments studded on the ground made me feel as if I was watching over a model town. I was sitting atop the bell tower that was made to notify the entire territory of the danger during the times of the emergencies.

The ball was tonight and it was almost evening, I wasn’t at the castle for obvious reasons and also because I couldn’t help but shake off the anxiety that I was feeling.

The nobles who were a thorn in my side regarding Davian’s issue were no longer an issue since I had shown them the consequences of their choices.

The two orders that I had given them were that they would stay loyal to Davian and support his position under any circumstances. And the second was that if they tried to sell out the dignity and secrets of North then I would flay them alive.

Their basic concern was being loyal to Davian unconditionally but with their lives on line they would do it and I was sure that soon they would find themselves being genuinely loyal to him since he was the kind of person who would make people rely on him and trust him.

Now, with all that past me I was sitting on the stony edge with the huge bell behind me and the cloudy sky closer to me than the earth.

I breathed out the smoke watching far and wide.

"Hey, Goddess of Wisdom weren’t you going to explain me some stuff?" I asked but there was no response.

It had been the same since the time that I rescued the elves and dwarves. My Patrons were silent as if they had deserted their positions and even this new entity wasn’t any good.

I still hadn’t gone back to Izkar to see what the kids were up to as I still hadn’t figured out on what to do with them.

They were the most vulnerable of the people under my wing right now, I could have sent them to my town but the Gate was closed and Northern territory was locked up for the winter. So, they would have to stay around for a few more months till I could arrange for them to be sent to Oasis.

Besides that, I needed to look for a person who could take care of the project that I was laying foundation of. A trustworthy, shrewd and cunning person who could match up to the intelligence and skills of the highest ranking minister in the royal court or at least half of me.

I unfurled my wings and leapt off of the ledge feeling the chilly winds against my half-covered face.

I returned to the Frosthail castle and watched as the carriages with different coat of arms pouring inside the estate and the people dressed in lavish clothes rushing inside the castle to escape the snowfall.

The ball was going to start soon.

I flew over to my room and to my surprise, I found someone already inside.

"Whoa, you scared me!" I gasped as I saw Silas sitting on the chair by the fireplace.

"Where did you go?" He asked and I brushed off the snow from my cloak and peeled it off before hanging it over the hanger.

"To catch some fresh air." I answered and removed my earstud going back to my original form.

"It’s snowing outside."

"I know, I’m a Frost Mage as well, so I feel in my element if it’s snowing."

I walked over and sat down on the chair in front of Silas who stared at me.

"Why are you staring holes into my head, Uncle?" I asked and he sighed.

"I haven’t seen you in your real form for over a month, you seem to have grown a little taller."

"Really?"

"And also, here." He pulled out two envelopes from his robe and I took them.

"Thank you, Uncle."

One of them had the seal of the Fairisles family while the other had the seal of the Aurelius duchy.

"I heard you were planning to establish something."

I nodded, "I have been thinking of it ever since Oasis was formed and now that I have the elves and dwarves too so, I need to speed it up."

"You know it’s pointless to do anything for them, Reina. They won’t ever be able to live in this kingdom with dignity, they will be looked down as slaves anywhere they go."

"Not in their own homeland, Uncle." I said making Silas stare at me.

"Don’t tell me you..." He sighed and massaged his temples.

"I wonder how far you’re planning on going, Reina. I thought you were a genius far advanced from your aged peers and also from this era, but now it seems like you’re recklessly charging in any domain that comes across."

I looked at Silas with a small smile, I had to charge in myself because I had the responsibility of this world on my shoulders and the only liberty in this was that I could choose my pawns.

"You don’t need to worry, Uncle. I’m not going to the Elvenland or Ortbon or sending those kids there right away. I would have to wait at least till the Gates of North open. There is still work to be done."

Elvenland was the land of Elves while Ortbon was the country which was inside Elvenland deep into the mountain ranges where the dwarves lived.

"May I ask why you are doing all this?" Silas asked in a serious tone.

He had asked this question various times in the past but this time even for me it sounded absurd for an eleven-year-old to be involved with the stuff that even the ambitious people of the higher standing would find tedious or downright insane to do.

"I’m just doing what I can to solve the issues that I face."

"Isn’t there any other way which doesn’t involve you going to the black market of risking your life?"

I chuckled, with the kind of powers I had accumulated I would be the least likely in danger if a war broke out.

"I was given the power beyond my standing, Uncle. And with this power I guess I have my own responsibilities and duties to fulfill to do so that when I face the Creator one day, I would be able to tell Him that I made good use of His gift."

"Since when are you religious?" Silas asked.

"I was always a spiritualist." I smiled making him sigh.

He was quiet for a while staring at the fire burning in the hearth while I opened the envelope from my home first, finding three letters inside.

One from my father, one from Rune and one from Viscount Ainsworth.

Father’s letter comprised of how much he missed me and was worried about my safety, he also added of the happenings in the Duchy and also the matters of the Royal court since he was starting to work harder to solidify his place in the social and political world.

He seemed to know a good deal about how to deal with his problems now and was starting to grow a bit colder towards those who tried to take advantage of him or thought he was a pushover.

I was impressed by him.

Rune also asked of my wellbeing before reporting his achievements as being established as a model student of the Eden University. Eden University was the institution made by the Royal family to educate the future of the nobility, well, that was what it was shown on the surface.

Eden University was in actuality was supposed to be a place where the Young Masters and the Mistresses would be taught about the social world and hone their skills but the level of corruption in this institution was a notch higher than the Royal court itself.

Lastly, Viscount’s highlighted the improvements of my father and brother and also told me about the drawbacks. He gave me concise reports of the happenings in my town and mine and as an addition I also got the other information which was in vogue in the capital.

I opened the next letter of the Fairisles seal and found two letters inside, one from Grandfather and other from Eric and Elise.

Grandfather, after asking of my wellbeing had given a detailed report of Eric’s progress including the affairs of the royal court which missed from father’s and Viscount’s letters.

The Golden Serpent was planning something and I had to be ready for it.

Eric and Elise’s letters included their worries about my health and wellbeing apart from how they were doing and how they were missing me and working hard on their own.

"They’re all doing good." I mumbled with a smile.

"Tell me, Reina." I looked up from the letter as Silas suddenly spoke up.

"Yes?"

"Do you really think you need to do all this?"

I sighed and faced the flames that were feeding over the dry wood and couldn’t hep but ponder over his question. The question that I had asked myself multiple times, from the time of my past life.

"I’m doing what I can, Uncle. I’m not God, so, I have to do what is in my hands so that I and my family would live peacefully in a safe environment."

Silas stared at me for a moment before he stood up brushing his hands over his robe straightening out the creases.

"I’ll get going now."

I smiled, "Have fun at the ball, Uncle and if possible find me a beautiful and intelligent Aunt."

Silas massaged his temples before looking at me with a slightly sour expression that made me laugh.

He left and I stayed in my seat staring at the dancing flames and wondering the purpose of my existence in general before I received that notification that made my heart jump.
