The Kingmaker System-Chapter 79 - 78. Gaining Trust (1)
Chapter 79: 78. Gaining Trust (1)
We rented a room in the inn which wasn’t as luxurious but it was a recommended inn by Hael.
And I could see why he had recommended this particular inn. First of all, it was quite close to the outskirts of the capital yet, it was in the market place and second, this place was frequented by all kinds of people. So, I guess, this was also one of the places where the secret meetings were held apart from the tavern.
"Master, it’s time." Lyall announced as I was staring out at the clear starry sky which had a half moon shining the night.
Lyall and I walked down the stairs and went straight to the mess hall where we saw Hael waiting for us with the one whose shoulder I dislocated the other day. I walked over to him as he also stood at a distance from his superior. He flinched as I stood beside him but didn’t step away.
"Are you the only ones here? I thought we were talking to your Leader?" Lyall asked.
"What about you? I don’t see your great Master anywhere." Hael retorted.
"If it’s going to be this way then, I guess you don’t want to coordinate with us."
Lyall stood up and Hael placed down a slip of paper on the table.
"This is the message from our Leader for your Master. Our Leader can’t show up in public unless there’s a solid reason to, I can understand that you revere your Master a lot but that’s also the same with us." Hael said and I gestured for Lyall to sit down.
Lyall sat back down and looked at the slip without touching it.
"What’s this about?"
"You said your Master is capable of doing what we can’t, right?" Hael said, "Our Leader wishes to witness it before we put our trust in you."
Lyall sighed and crossed his arms at his chest.
"And what exactly do they want?"
"It’s written in the slip. If your Master can fulfill this request then, our Leader and our Revolutionary Army will give you our full support and we will fight together." Hael announced.
Lyall stared at the slip of paper on the table before he leaned back in his seat his eyes going briefly over to me as I stood in my spot observing silently.
I had already instructed him to take up anything that these people throw at us but not let his pride or guard down.
Still, it was a good choice of words from Hael, using the form of request to make me earn their trust while in reality it was nothing but a form of test from their leader to see what this "Master" was capable of.
"Deliver it to your Master safely." Hael said.
Lyall didn’t have to check with me before reaching out and accepting the request.
"He’s free to deny-"
"My Master has already accepted it." Lyall affirmed as he placed the slip of paper in the fold of his tunic.
Hael frowned slightly, "He doesn’t even know what this request is about."
Lyall looked at Hael in eyes with a blank expression clouding his icy look.
"My Master’s decision is already made so, even if this task is of blowing up the Scorpion’s lair then he will do it."
I wanted to clap at Lyall’s words, well, of course, I was the one who would have to make his words true but I still couldn’t help but feel happy to see his trust in me and my strength.
Guess, I’d have to keep working hard so that he would keep bragging about me like this.
I had been meditating at nights to grow the compatibility and harmony of my Dragon’s mana and my Frost Magic. So, I guess if not explosion then I could at least create a small tsunami all over this Scorpion’s lair.
Hael stared at Lyall silently for a good few seconds before he smiled.
"I wish to see this Master of yours."
Lyall smiled back and said, "You will, after you’ve gained his trust."
Lyall ordered some food and gestured for me to sit down, I walked over and sat down beside him in front of Hael.
"Yoy don’t treat your servant as normal servant."
"He’s a human just like me and it’s my Master’s rule to not undermine any person’s worth." Lyall spoke.
"Your Master seems like a generous person."
"He is."
I wasn’t. I only ever spent my time and money on those who were on my side and of worth to my cause.
The food was served and we started eating, Hael gestured for his partner to sit along with us before he looked at me and Lyall.
"What’s your name?" Hael asked me.
I was almost tempted to use one of my favourite anime character’s name but I swallowed the urge.
"Ryu." I spoke.
"Ryu." He repeated.
"Ryu." His companion mumbled quietly as well before I asked his name.
"I’m Ciro." He answered.
"Have you ever seen your Master?" Hael asked me.
"I see him everyday." I answered as I ate.
"How does he look like?" He asked.
"He’s good-looking." I answered.
"He’s beautiful." Lyall spoke up making me cough, he quickly pushed the glass of water to me which I picked up and took a sip from.
Hael looked at both Lyall and then at me.
"I’d really to see him if he’s as you say he is."
I wonder what you would say when you see my real form.
Well, not even Lyall knew that Ocean’s form wasn’t my real form and I was originally an eleven year old girl who was supposed to be recuperating in the country side because of her health issues. At least that’s the excuse used to justify my absence.
After the dinner, Lyall handed me the slip and I walked over to the room.
I was about to unfold the slip when I heard something from the small cloth bag that was placed on the desk.
I walked up and pulled the communication brooch out.
"Re-Ocean, are you there?"
He still couldn’t get used to calling my aliases.
"Please don’t call any name while contacting me, Uncle." I replied.
"How am I supposed to know if you’re safe then?"
"Just wait, I’ll be back till my brother’s birthday."
"That’s still two months away."
"Yes, only two months away."
"You’ve been already gone for over two months, Reina." He reminded and I hummed.
No wonder, I missed them so much.
[Defender of Divine Glory smiles at your thoughts.]
"What?" I asked him.
[Goddess of Wisdom reminds as how you were hesitant about accepting the Aurelius family as your own when you first arrived in this world.]
[Defender of Divine Glory says he knew love could even melt the heart of stone.]
"Are you saying I have a heart of stone?"
[Goddess of Wisdom calls Defender of Divine Glory rude.]
Yeah, you tell him!
[Goddess of Wisdom rectifies that you have a heart of ice.]
"You’re no good!"
"Reina, are you there?" I heard Silas’s voice and turned my attention to him.
"I’ll deal with you two later." I thought before replying to Silas.
"Yes, what did you say?"
"Your father and Rune keep pestering me about your whereabouts and if they can contact you."
"... Are they doing well?" I asked.
"Yes, they’re working hard and improving themselves so that you can praise them when you return." fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
I chuckled, "I’m glad. What about Eric and Grandfather?"
"Eric is working hard as well, he had also been improving exponentially in his magic lessons. I’m almost surprised at the rate at which he’s progressing, within a year or so he will be on a Scholar level." Silas reported.
"And the old man is still well and healthy."
That seemed like a progress. Usually, he would only say, "The old man is still alive."
"We should check your level when you return." He added and I hummed.
"All right."
"How’s your work going? You’re in Mordino, aren’t you?" He asked.
"Yes, my work hasn’t quite started yet." I said as I unfolded the slip of paper and read its contents in the light of the oil lamp.
"Not yet? You do know that you don’t have much time, right?" He asked.
"Let me rephrase that, my work will start within two days." I replied.
I heard him sigh on the other end, "Whatever you do, just return safely, Reina. Your brother will be really upset if you don’t show up for his birthday."
"You say that every time, Uncle. Besides, tell Rune that I’ll be bringing him a good birthday gift."
"We all were expecting some souvenirs, Reina." He sounded like he was pouting.
I laughed, "Apologies, I’ll get you all something just something special for the birthday boy."
Another sigh, "All right, I’ll let him know."
We talked for a little more while about the magical devices before we called the night.
I looked at the note in my hand again and smiled.
The leader of Revolutionary Army sure had thrown me a challenge, this task showed that they were willing to bet it all on me if possible if I successfully finished this mission.
The date on the note was of day after tomorrow, I should be thankful that I had one extra day to prepare for the plan.
There was a knock on the door, "Come in, Lyall."
Nobody except for Lyall would show me respect in my current form.
He walked inside and stood in front of me.
"I checked the surroundings and took down a few who looked suspicious, Master."
"A few?"
"I find a lot of people here suspicious but if I were to take all of them down there won’t be any people on streets." He answered making me smile.
"So, what Hael said was true after all. We’re being tailed and we had no idea."
"I didn’t feel any particular murderous intent from any of them, it was probably only those who act as the eyes and ears of the Scorpion."
"Hm... Still, it’s concerning if we can’t tell them apart."
"I apologise for being lacking, Master."
"Not your fault, Lyall. Either ways, this gives me some good idea of using his eyes and ears for my benefit."
"What?"
I smirked showing him the slip of paper.
