The Mind-Reading Mate: Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me?!-Chapter 146: A Gift From My Wife (I)
Chapter 146: A Gift From My Wife (I)
Primrose was shivering so badly that her teeth were clicking nonstop. She had already tried hugging herself, rubbing her hands together, even curling into a ball, but the cold clung to her like a stain on a dirty plate.
It was so bitterly cold that, in the end, she couldn’t help but throw herself into Edmund’s arms before hypothermia attacked her.
"H-how can the air be this cold?" Primrose clung to him tightly, as if trying to melt into his body just to find warmth.
The carriage was still moving, as the soldiers were doing their best to find a safe spot to set up camp.
Thankfully, the coachman had slowed down the pace to prevent too much cold wind from seeping through the carriage’s ventilation.
"This region is a bit special," Edmund said, wrapping her tightly in his arms and pulling her inside his large fur coat. "Unlike other places, the land around Moonshadow City and its surroundings is rather unique."
Primrose tilted her head up, her chin pressed gently against his chest. "What do you mean?"
Edmund didn’t answer right away because he was having a minor internal panic. [Why did I let her sit on my lap like this?! And why is this road so bumpy?!]
Just as he thought that, the carriage wheel accidentally rolled over a large stone, causing the carriage to jolt.
Both of them bounced slightly off their seats, and Primrose felt something ... very big and hard press against her thighs.
She narrowed her eyes and stared suspiciously at Edmund, who was clearly trying his best to hide the side effect of their cuddling.
"Edmund," she called his name in a serious tone. "I just asked you a question."
Edmund swallowed hard, clearing his throat before answering, "This region sits on top of a layer of permafrost. That’s why the temperature feels freezing, even though winter hasn’t arrived yet."
Apparently, the Kings of Noctvaris had spent years trying to cover the frozen ground with soil from warmer lands. But no matter how much they added, the frost underneath never went away.
People who grew up in Moonshadow had already adapted to the freezing temperature, but those from warmer places often felt as if their bones were turning to ice the moment they stepped foot here.
Still, despite the harsh climate, Moonshadow remained a popular destination for those seeking nature’s beauty and a peaceful retreat.
"I-I didn’t know any of this," Primrose said, her voice trembling along with her body.
Edmund gently wrapped a scarf around her neck to shield her skin from the biting cold.
He said, "That’s understandable. We never shared this with outsiders. The truth about the permafrost was kept secret by people in Noctvaris."
The reason was quite simple, when something bad like war happened, the people of Noctvaris could use the Moonshadow territory as a trap.
The city looked harmless on the outside, but if enemies marched in unprepared, the cold would hit them hard. Hard enough to freeze them to the bone ... maybe even shatter them.
That was why Edmund had strictly forbidden anyone from outside Noctvaris to enter Moonshadow without proper clearance.
"What about me?" Primrose asked through clenched teeth, the cold now nearly unbearable. "Will my bones freeze and crack too?"
Just imagining it was enough to make Primrose instantly regret her decision to come to Moonshadow City.
Maybe this was the price she had to pay, a punishment sent by the gods because she had thoughts of killing someone.
But if that were true, then surely the gods had punished the wrong person!
"Nothing like that will happen to you, my wife." Edmund gently took her hands and blew warm air onto her freezing palms.
He continued, "Like I told you before, we’ve already covered the frozen ground with regular soil. So even though it still feels cold, it’s not enough to freeze your bones."
Honestly, Primrose was certain that Edmund wouldn’t have allowed her to come to Moonshadow if he wasn’t sure she could handle the weather.
"Why aren’t you wearing gloves?" Edmund frowned. "I told Lady Solene to prepare warm clothes for you earlier. Did she neglect her duty?"
Primrose immediately shook her head. "No, no! It’s not her fault! I was the one who insisted on not wearing the winter gloves because I thought it was too much."
She lowered her head and murmured, "I didn’t know this place could be this cold ..."
She had truly believed everyone was overreacting, so when Solene and Marielle asked her to wear winter gloves, she had turned them down without a second thought.
Oh—wait. Speaking of gloves, Primrose suddenly remembered something important.
"Husband, actually ... I have a gift for you," she said softly, her voice sounding a little shy, because she still felt that her gift wasn’t anything special.
She had planned to give it to Edmund yesterday, but she never got the chance, especially after her husband had spent the entire night pounding her honeypot.
"A gift?" Edmund looked at her in disbelief. "You want to give me a gift?"
[MY WIFE WANTS TO GIVE ME A GIFT?!]
He repeated it in his head, sounding overly dramatic, like it was the greatest news he’d ever heard.
Seeing how excited he was, Primrose’s voice grew even softer. "But ... it’s not anything special," she said nervously, glancing up to see his reaction. "You ... you can throw it away if you don’t like it."
Edmund’s eyebrows immediately furrowed sharply like a hawk. He looked genuinely upset by her words. "I would never throw away your gift."
[I’d rather chop off my hands than throw away something my wife gave me,] he thought, dead serious.
Primrose let out a soft sigh. She was already used to his dramatic inner monologues.
She reached under a pile of pillows and pulled out a small box she had hidden there.
Her fingers trembled slightly as she offered it to him, clearly nervous. "I ... I made it myself," Primrose said, her face flushing red. "So I don’t think it’s that good ..."
Only now did she realize how embarrassing it was to give her husband a gift.
No wonder Edmund always seemed awkward when giving her presents too.
"If it’s from you, then I already know it’s wonderful." Edmund didn’t waste a second before taking the box from her hands.
