The Spare's Second Chance in Apocalypse-Chapter 161: Ch : A Sudden Confession- Part 1
Chapter 161: Ch 161: A Sudden Confession- Part 1
The people around Selene shifted in embarrassment and annoyance as they watched the morning routine change.
Selene especially did not like the way how the awakeners were looking at their side, daring them to act out and reap the consequences.
Power had gotten to the awakener’s head and they no longer considered rules to be important. This was not what Selene intended to do.
’Tsk! I would live nothing more than to smack some sense into these people. But even I know that it is not the time to be doing something like this.’
Selene knew that, but it was hard to hold herself back. But she somehow did and breakfast passed without any incident.
With nothing else left to say, Selene decided that it was best to stick to her role and focus on helping the workers around her.
She spent the day assisting where she could—lifting, organizing, and even helping some of the non-awakened adjust to the work. Her unassuming nature and willingness to help made it easy for her to blend in.
And it also made it easy for people to overlook her as just another person.
For a while, everything was going well.
That was, until she was noticed.
A young awakener sat perched on a stack of materials, lazily observing the people below him.
His light-colored hair was messy but stylish, his sharp features framed by an arrogant smirk.
He had noticed Selene hours ago, but now that the inspection was over and things were calming down, he finally decided to act.
"She’s an interesting one. I like how she looks. She almost has this...interesting air around her. I wonder how she would feel if I decide to spend time with her."
He muttered to himself.
His lackey, a non-awakened woman with her head bowed, stood nearby, listening silently.
The awakener glanced at her.
"Go fetch that redhead over there. But don’t tell her who is calling her and for what. I want it get to know her better."
He ordered, nodding toward Selene.
The non-awakened woman hesitated, her hands tightening at her sides.
"Why? She doesn’t look that interesting."
She asked cautiously. It might have sounded like jealousy to some, but the female was too terrified to consider what she was feeling as jealousy.
The awakener’s smirk faded, and his gaze hardened.
"None of your business. Just do as you are told to do. You do not need to worry about anything else."
The woman flinched.
She knew better than to question him, but something about the way he was eyeing Selene made her uneasy.
After all, she had been taught a lesson about disobedience the first time she met this man.
When she didn’t move fast enough, the awakener sighed dramatically and stood up. Then, without warning, he let out a small burst of energy, just enough to make the ground tremble slightly beneath them.
The non-awakened woman stiffened in fear.
"You like your job here, don’t you? If you want to keep it, then you better listen to me. Otherwise, I will make your life a living hell."
He asked, tilting his head.
She quickly nodded.
The woman doubted that her life could somehow get worse, but she did not want to risk it. That was why she decided to turn off her brain and do as she was told to do.
"Then go. Get her."
She had no choice. With a reluctant bow of her head, she turned and made her way toward Selene.
____
Selene was wiping sweat from her forehead when she noticed the woman approaching.
Something about her body language was off. Her steps were hesitant, her hands trembled slightly, and most of all, she kept muttering apologies under her breath.
Selene raised an eyebrow.
"Someone wants to talk to you."
The woman said quietly.
Selene studied her.
"Who?"
The woman flinched.
"I... I can’t say."
Selene frowned. The way this woman kept apologizing made her stomach twist.
"You don’t have to—"
"I do! I don’t have a choice."
The woman cut in quickly. Then, she added in a small, defeated voice.
Selene could see the hopelessness in her eyes.
It made her heart ache.
But now wasn’t the time for emotions.
She took a slow breath, straightened her back, and placed a comforting hand on the woman’s shoulder.
"You don’t have to bow your head to them forever."
Selene said gently.
The woman looked surprised—like no one had ever said that to her before.
Selene offered her a small smile.
"Where do I need to go?"
The woman quickly told her, her voice barely above a whisper.
Selene nodded, though she felt a slight unease in her gut.
The meeting spot was in one of the less crowded, more isolated parts of the construction site.
That alone was a red flag.
But before she could ask any more questions, she noticed how the woman was trembling.
She was terrified.
Selene didn’t want to push her any further, so she simply nodded again and started walking in the given direction.
The moment Selene was gone, the non-awakened woman let out a deep exhale. She had done what she was told—her part in this was over.
At least, that’s what she thought.
Because just as she relaxed, someone sat down beside her.
She nearly jumped out of her skin.
Her eyes darted to the side, and she immediately froze when she saw him.
A man with raven-black hair and piercing golden eyes.
Ethan.
Her breath hitched. She had heard the rumors about him—everyone had. He was powerful. Dangerous. Unforgiving.
And yet, here he was, casually leaning back, arms resting on his knees as if he had all the time in the world.
She tried to swallow her fear, but it didn’t work.
Ethan didn’t look at her immediately. He just gazed off in the distance, as if lost in thought.
Then, after a moment, he finally spoke.
"So, do you mind telling me why you just sent that person to?"
He said, voice low and almost casual.
