Chapter 43: Mana

"Listen carefully now Xu Ming. All around us, in the air, in the sky, even in the stars there exists an energy permeating all throughout the universe. This energy we call Cosmic energy, or you can imagine it like the ’Mana’ that plagued all of the ancient novels in our own Human history. It is using this Cosmic energy that we are able to do the things we do. Immortals have been created in our race due to this one simple but very complex energy."

Xu Ming listened to his master speak his wise teachings as he was excited to finally be given the opportunity to cultivate like the rest of humanity when they reach the minimum age requirements.

He had just turned 16 the day before, the age where one begins cultivation, and now his father had hired a great cultivation scholar to teach him the basics of cultivation as well as to watch over him when he establishes his foundation lest he makes any life threatening mistakes.

"Where did this energy come from master?" He asked curiously.

"Cosmic energy doesn’t come from anywhere, it has always been there and it always will be. It has existed since time immemorial, and will continue to exist long after the human race is gone."

Xu Ming was shocked to hear his master’s words as he had truly not known such an omnipotent energy existed. He was a sheltered child and didn’t know much of the world’s workings but he still knew of theories pertaining the death of the universe countless years in the future, where even the smallest particles and faintest energies will disappear.

But to know that this Cosmic energy would survive this was mind boggling to him.

"Now, Xu Ming do exactly as I say and do not stray from anything I guide you in."

His master changed the topic of the conversation to a more productive one, he wasn’t being paid by the hour after all so he didn’t want to dilly dally any more than he has to.

"I am about to teach you the human race’s most powerful cultivation technique, the ’Cosmic star technique’. It is said that this technique was found in the most ancient of temples in the cultivation universe and ever since it was discovered, it has proven time and time again it’s power against all of the other techniques publicly available, hence becoming the widespread and widely accepted most powerful cultivation technique."

"Listen closely, and follow the technique step by step. Do not rush, this first step requires patience."

"Get into a comfortable position to meditate and concentrate on the environment around you. Focus on the stars in the bright sky, focus on the innumerable planets in the vast universe. Once you achieve the most basic of comprehensions of this first step, a faint and illusory chart of stars will appear in your mind. Focus on that chart."

"Now think about the stars, how they hold such vast amounts of Cosmic energy, how they are the origins of all life, how they nurture the universe, giving birth to countless races and civilisations."

"Once all of this is completed, you should feel a cool sensation entering your body. Do not resist it and let it flow through you, slowly washing away the impurities in your body."

Lumen had a moment of clarity as this vague and distant memory had surfaced in his mind. He was only an observer of the scene in the memory as his AI dominance spread everywhere in the universe, and he was observing the master teaching his student from one of the many cameras in the room.

’How could I have not thought to treat mana not as something the system had brought with it along with it’s arrival, but something that has always been there and will always be there...’

Lumen was enlightened as he finally understood that there was more to the system than meets the eye. Mana permeates everything and once one learns to control it, their power would increase by manifolds.

He finally began to understand Mana as more than just another stat on his interface, but a force of nature of the universe.

The moment Lumen made this realisation, it seemed the system had finally accepted his enlightenment as many system messages appeared all at once.

Lumen didn’t have time to read through all of the descriptions of his newly obtained skill and title as he immediately applied [Fire Infusion] to his spear and used it to counterattack the Elite wolf who had just arrived in front of him.

Intense flames on par with his [Fire Bolt] surrounded his spear with an aura like appearance. Curiously, although the spear was made of wood and scrappy iron, it was fine under the roaring flames and not a single bit of damage was caused to it.

The wolf, seeing Lumen’s new power went even more into a frenzied mode as it desperately wanted to end this foe as soon as possible as it sensed a very real threat to it’s life from that spear.

In the humid and cold cave, a show of man vs beast was going on.

Lumen held the spear in his right hand and looked attentively at the wolf who had now stepped up it’s charge once again.

Boom!

In an instant his body was like a bolt of lightening as he swooped down from above a tall rock towards the furious wolf.

He looked ahead of him as his eyes met the wolf’s, only to see above him a flash of the beast’s claws.

His spear instinctively swung upward, producing fiery after images at a terrifying speed that now matched the wolf.

*Clang*

The beast’s ferocious claws hit Lumen’s spear, causing the beast to shrink back both from the recoil and the immense pain the flames surrounding the spear had caused to it’s paw.

’Holy sh*t!’ Lumen’s forehead was covered in a cold sweat as he had only noticed the beast’s paw at the final moment. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

’There was no sign at all, no movement in the air when it swung it’s paw. This beast must have some sort of affinity with an element to be able to achieve this.’

Lumen’s mind was stirring as it came closer to the truth of Elite beasts.

However he didn’t dwell on it as he charged forward towards the Elite wolf.

’This is it!’

The moment he closed in, his hands turned into after images with the intense orange and yellow light being the giveaway that he still held the spear. His spear stabbed at the wolf repeatedly, the wolf not being able to block every attack.

’Haha, this is why spears are better than swords!’

At the level of these two powerhouses, any single attack caused damage to the environment around them and that was visible as very strike Lumen dealt to the wolf caused slight reverberations in the ground and some rocks and dust to fall from the ceiling.

’This is the end for you, damned beast!’

Completely against the odds, Lumen was now closer than ever to finally taking out the Elite.
