Transmigrating to Modern Earth from the Future-Chapter 55: Shroud of darkness
Chapter 55: Shroud of darkness
The wolf stayed in it’s shroud of darkness as Lumen stood a distance away observing the thing carefully. He wanted to take this opportunity to improve his combat abilities against wolves that could utilise the darkness element as he had only ever faced one such wolf before and that was the Elite.
He could visualise how some scenarios could play out in his head, but imaginary combat was nothing when the opportunity for live combat against such a beast arose.
The only thing Lumen was thankful for was the fact that the beast didn’t seem to have any attack skills involving the element like that Elite did. If it did have such a thing, he would be having a much harder time against the thing.
The issue of the darkness shroud still stood for Lumen as he currently had no clue how he could overcome such a spell, if it was one.
Eventually, he decided that his best strategy was just to attack the wolf from a distance. There was no currently possible way for him to know when the wolf was going to attack.
If he closed in and tried to attack the beast from close range with his spear again, yes he would be able to preserve some of his mana from not having to use any of his spells, but the wolf could catch him off guard with an attack at any time due to him not being able to see where it’s paws or mouth were.
He increase the range between him and the beast to over 30 metres as he started conjuring a spell he had long become accustomed to.
[Fire Bolt]
The familiar ball of fire appeared above his left hand as he held his magically charged spear in his right hand.
Before the wolf could make out what he was doing, he tossed the small but mighty fire bolt towards the shroud of darkness the wolf was caped in.
’If I can’t single out any vital points to attack with my spear, I will simple attack them all at once!’
His idea was simple, use an area of effect attack to draw the wolf out of it’s shroud or at least force it to expend even more mana and stamina trying to defend against the attack.
Just as he had predicted, as soon as the explosion of fiery mana was set off, the shroud of darkness was immediately dispersed into motes of black dust before disappearing completely. But he didn’t stop there as he immediately used his other arm to launch three of the illusory spears made from mana.
They pierced through the air and reached the wolf in less than a second, causing quite a hefty amount of damage to it’s chest and hind leg while the third spear missed.
Lumen also noticed that the fire bolt spell seemed to have dealt even more damage than it usually did, and it didn’t take him long to notice why.
[Skill - Fire Bolt levelled up! Lv.1 -> Lv.2]
He hadn’t been keeping track of any of his skill’s proficiency recently but he was pretty sure that he wasn’t even in the 80% range in his Fire Bolt skill before he had launched that one.
’Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that I used the skill to directly counter a spell of another element?’
He didn’t dwell on the reasons behind his skill’s level up longer than he had to as his focus never left the now revealed wolf.
The beast seemed to be in a disoriented state at first as it struggled to maintain it’s balance but it quickly collected itself, not wanting to remain weak right before it’s enemy. Instead of giving Lumen the upper hand again, the wolf led the charge towards him this time with it’s eyes displaying it’s ferocity.
Minutes passed as Lumen dodged, weaved, and probed the wolf with his spear, all while it furiously tried it’s best to deal as much damage back to it’s attacker. The damage to the wolf kept increasing over time, and so did it’s bloodlust as Lumen could literally feel the tense atmosphere between them getting hotter and hotter.
With little warning, the beast’s eyes suddenly turned blood red as veins started bursting around the seams of the wolf’s eyes. It’s entire body soon gave off a deathly aura as Lumen felt significant danger from whatever the beast was planning.
He immediately raised his spear in front of him to block as a howl even more terrifying than before penetrated the walls of the cave and even made Lumen’s ears ring reverberated through the area.
But it was far from done as it was only just getting started, and immediately took hold of Lumen’s spear with a dominating biting force. Neither side refused to let go of the spear, prompting the wolf to lift it’s huge head and consequently taking Lumen and the spear with it.
His legs dangled in the air and he was unable to summon the spear back to his inventory, as apparently he was hearing for the first time from the system that only he could be in contact with the spear if he wanted to move it back.
The rule made sense to Lumen but he was still deeply annoyed by it. With no other choice, he let go of his spear and dropped to the ground. The wolf was put off balance with the sudden shift in weight and balance from the spear and Lumen took this opportunity to summon a Fire bolt right underneath it’s stomach.
The shockwave sent them both flying but Lumen wasn’t in as desperate a state as the wolf due to him managing to propel himself backwards as soon as he unleashed the spell.
The aftermath was even more devastating than the first time he used it on the wolf as it was a direct, point blank range explosion to the it’s stomach.
The upgraded skill had proved to be even more effective than he had expected as it’s power had now surpassed his Arcane Spear’s attached skill!
His own arsenal of skills were starting to catch up to the power of his Epic ranked spear! This was truly good news for Lumen as he didn’t want his spear to be a crutch for him in the case he ever lost it.
As the smoke cleared, a now dismembered wolf was revealed with the latter half of it’s body gone.
The satisfaction from coming out on top of the challenge came to Lumen all at once as he walked over to the barely alive wolf and put it out of it’s misery.
