Chapter 28: 028 because she is worth it_1

The grandmother’s grave was in the town. She had lived here all her life, and therefore naturally wished to stay, even in death. So, her body was buried in the town.

It had just rained, and the air in the small town was refreshing. Lu Qingyi rolled down her car window, gazing out of it vacantly.

Each and every sight in the town was familiar to her, but the people who used to be there with her were gone now.

"Sister, the air in the countryside is so fresh."

Lu Jiayue and Lu Qingyi were seated in the back with Yao Meishu sitting in the passenger seat and Lu Yao driving.

Lu Jiayue, behaving like a child who had never left the city, was excited about the view from the window.

Lu Qingyi glanced once at Lu Jiayue and then turned her gaze elsewhere.

"Sister, what did you do when you lived here?"

There were people working hard in the fields, busy with the harvest. Lu Jiayue leaned in closer to Lu Qingyi, curiosity brimming in her eyes.

What a dirty job.

Lu Jiayue looked at the people working in the fields, complaining internally about their conditions. She looked down upon them; villagers were bound to do that dirty work that belonged to the rural countryside.

Lu Qingyi countered, "What do you think?"

Lu Qingyi gave a faint laugh.

Although she had grown up in the countryside, she hadn’t done many farm chores. Her grandmother wouldn’t let her touch them.

Later, during school years, she was always busy studying. After college, she became a professor and only came back for holidays or festivals.

She was always quite busy throughout the year, but in her grandmother’s eyes, she was only a professor.

"Sister, I will always give in to you in the future."

Lu Jiayue bit her lip as she spoke, sincerity shining in her eyes.

"Heh," Lu Qingyi let out a cold laugh.

The car stopped in front of their grandmother’s house, a place that retained a sense of its age and history.

"Sister Qing."

The moment Lu Qingyi stepped out of the car, she was stopped by a call. freewēbnoveℓ.com

She looked towards the source of the sound, to see a mature woman, around twenty-five years old, holding a hoe and looking at her with a warm smile.

Lu Jiayue looked at the woman, her eyebrows knitted in distaste.

The woman was not bad-looking; it was just the hoe she was carrying.

Lu Yao and Yao Meishu had already gone into the house.

"On vacation?"

Lu Qingyi tilted her head; she looked at the woman with a questioning gaze.

"Yeah, I took a few days off, my parents are getting older, and I came to help. They don’t want to move to the city and cling to their small piece of land."

Jiang Mengyao put down the hoe, let out a soft sigh, her tone filled with resignation.

Jiang Mengyao was the only child of older parents. Despite her success and the offer to take them to her city apartment, her parents either didn’t want to be a burden on her, or they simply missed their hometown. No matter how much she tried to convince them, her parents wouldn’t budge.

Therefore, she had to take time off to help them, despite their disapproval of her action.

She was only able to get away, telling her parents it was vacation time.

"The older generation is often nostalgic, they prefer the fresh air of their hometown."

Lu Qingyi gave a nod. She didn’t say anything further.

"By the way, Sister Qing, could you talk to my parents? I can support them and I don’t want them to overwork themselves."

Jiang Mengyao looked at Lu Qingyi with anticipation.

Although Jiang Mengyao was older than Lu Qingyi, she called her "Sister Qing" quite naturally.

Seemingly, the only path for a country child was through reading; the parents were farmers and could not lay out a path for her.

When she failed her college entrance exams, she was devastated. It was Lu Qingyi who comforted her, encouraged her, and provided her with many study resources, giving her courage to start over.

You would think Jiang Mengyao was twenty-five this year, having graduated college at twenty-three, and having failed her college exam at eighteen.

Seven years prior, Lu Qingyi was but twelve, yet she was much more composed than Lu Jiayue. In front of Lu Qingyi, she felt more like a younger sister than anything else.

Lu Qingyi nodded, "Okay, I’ll give it a try."

Despite her cold demeanor, she usually responded with kindness to the goodwill of the townsfolk. Furthermore, she and Jiang Mengyao were on good terms.

"I really appreciate it."

Jiang Mengyao gave a wide grin.

Her parents held Lu Qingyi in high regard, they would at least take her advice into consideration.

"Big sister, are you even twenty yet?"

Watching the interaction between these two, Lu Jiayue asked, blinking in confusion.

Jiang Mengyao’s gaze stayed on Lu Qingyi, completely ignoring her presence.

Being ignored was truly uncomfortable. Particularly hearing Jiang Mengyao call Lu Qingyi "Sister Qing" again and again, she felt a pang of unease.

Just a country girl.

"Sister Qing, this is... "

Jiang Mengyao looked at Lu Jiayue, but instead of answering her, turned to ask Lu Qingyi.

Lu Qingyi just gave a light laugh, "My nominal sister."

Her voice was indifferent and emotionless.

Yes, in her eyes, Lu Jiayue was her sister only in name, carrying the so-called blood relationship.

Ah, nominal sister.

Jiang Mengyao nodded in understanding.

Lu Jiayue and Lu Qingyi did share similar features and she had noticed their sisterly relationship. But seeing their cold interaction, she had to ask Lu Qingyi to clarify.

Having heard what Lu Qingyi said, she understood that Lu Qingyi didn’t like her sister.

"Sister, what do you mean... "

Lu Jiayue looked at Lu Qingyi innocently, biting her lip in a pouty manner.

Nominal sister?

Heh, Lu Qingyi really was quite a hypocrite, pretending that she really liked being called sister.

Lu Qingyi replied coolly, "Just as it sounds."

"Sister Qing, are you here to visit Grandma Yao? I feel really bad, I couldn’t make it back that day."

If she remembered correctly, today was probably the one-month mourning period.

Jiang Mengyao spoke apologetically. If she had known about this, she would’ve made sure to be present, even if it meant taking time off work.

The people who had helped her the most were Lu Qingyi and her grandmother. She truly appreciated the kind old woman.

"It’s alright, my grandma preferred simplicity."

There was a soft smile on Lu Qingyi’s face.

Because of her grandmother’s preference for simplicity, the funeral was not held on a large scale.

"Sister, you must be twenty-five by now."

Lu Jiayue, looking at Lu Qingyi with a hint of jealousy, couldn’t help but question. Why should she be ignored?

"Yes, I’m twenty-five this year." Jiang Mengyao laughed, "I call Qingyi sister not because I’m younger than her, but because I respect her. She is deserving of my respect and worthy of me calling her sister."

Jiang Mengyao looked at Lu Jiayue with a half-smile, her attitude towards her somewhat chilly.

For those who Lu Qingyi did not favour, she saw no need to be particularly amiable towards them.

"What?" Lu Jiayue, taken aback, looked at Jiang Mengyao.

Worthy of respect?

Deserving?

Lu Qingyi hadn’t even finished high school. What could she have done to earn such respect? What made her deserving of the title of "Sister Qing"?

Lu Jiayue bit her lip, a flicker of defiance in her eyes.
