Be Careful What You Wish For: A Zombie Apocalypse-Chapter 255: Better Than You
Chapter 255: Better Than You
As if to prove my point that everything in the universe needed to bend to my will, I snapped my fingers as we were suddenly on the ground in front of Luca, Ronan, and a very, very cranky Daddy.
"Did you have fun?" asked Tank with a sigh as he took me from Dante. "We should keep going if you want to still have a chance to play some more games. What about Whack-a-mole? I think I saw it somewhere around here."
"What’s Whack-a-mole?" I asked, intrigued about this game.
"Only the greatest game in the world!" exclaimed Dimitri as he stole me away from Tank and quickly sped away. "Let me show you!"
We ended up in front of a game that looked a bit weird to me. There was a board with a bunch of circles in front of me, maybe about twenty to thirty circles, and a cartoon-sized hammer.
"You want to play?" sneered the Carnie as he looked down his nose at me. Seriously, was there only men working here? I mean, they needed to have at least one or two women hidden away. Then again, given the smell coming from this guy’s breath, I wouldn’t be surprised if he alone was responsible for scaring away all the females.
"Yes," grunted Dimitri, his eyes already alight with pleasure as he grabbed the hammer like he was Thor. "The dude in the suit will pay."
Dante, appearing out of nowhere, let out a long sigh as he rolled his eyes. "I’m not wearing a suit," he replied before pulling out his wallet and handing out a stack of bills to the Carnie.
"Even without the suit on, you still smell like a suit," shrugged Dimitri, his eyes never leaving the circles in front of him. Was he actually expecting something to come out of them?
"He’s right," chuckled the Carnie as he licked his fingers and counted the bills. "You stink like a suit. But your money is as good as anyone else’s, so let’s get started, shall we?"
Both Dimitri and I nodded our heads, Dimitri still staring down as I was staring at him. Whatever this game was, Wrath was absolutely enthralled.
"Here are the rules. When the mole pops up, you pop it back down as hard as you can. If you are too soft, it counts as a miss. Three misses and you lose the game" announced the Carnie in a loud voice.
"What happens if he loses?" I asked, cocking my head to the side.
"If you like him, you better hope that he doesn’t," was all the other man replied before music started to play. It sounded so familiar... "All around the mulberry bush, the monkey chased the weasel..."
Suddenly, a head popped up, tears running down its cheeks. Before it could even open its mouth, Dimitri hit it hard enough to crack it open like a pumpkin.
Blood and brain matter was all over the once pristine board, and I couldn’t help but smirk. "I assume that was hard enough?" I purred, my eyes still on Wrath. He was practically vibrating as he waited for the next head to pop up.
"I think I’m going to be sick," gagged Max as he turned around and looked frantically for a place to puke. "This entire place is wrong on so many levels, I can’t even begin to explain."
"Did anyone ask you to?" I sighed, closing my eyes. I was hoping that with some bonding time, Max would get what he wanted... time with those people who had once loved him. But the more he acted like this, the more distance he was creating.
"You are okay with that? You have grey matter on your head!" gagged Max again as he pointed a trembling finger at my head. "How are you okay with that? You are just as sick as everyone else around here!"
The smile completely disappeared from my face as I turned away from Dimitri. "I was willing to give you a chance," I said, my voice measured and in control. "The so-called good guys didn’t want you, so they sent you to my door, hoping for a mole in my house."
The moment I said ’mole,’ there was a scream and a splat from behind me as Dimitri and Wrath took out another head.
"I felt bad for you. The way you looked at Luca was as if he was your long-lost love, and you were finally reunited with each other. I was willing to give you a chance to show that you belonged with them... with or without me. And yet here you are, acting like you are better than everyone else."
I was collecting a crowd around us, but I really didn’t care. I was pissed. Yeah, I got that I was a bit more fucked up than others, but I had people who loved me enough to give me a part of themselves, even if it meant their death. Max could take his holier-than-thou attitude and shove it up his ass.
I was done.
"Acting like I am better than you?" sputtered Max, the color finally coming back to his face. "I am better than you! What part of me isn’t better than you? Luca, Ronan, Salvatore, Dimitri, and Désiré turned their backs on Réne for you. They gave up a brotherhood that withstood everything... until you! You are literally everything that is wrong in my world, and I wish you would just hurry up and fucking die!"
Everyone went silent; the only sounds that could be heard were the music from the speakers and the sound of Dimitri beating people with a hammer.
"All our lives," started Luca calmly as Salvatore was trying to hold back both Ronan and Désiré. "The rest of us were doing nothing but following Réne around like fucking puppies as he went out and saved the world. I, for one, had no desire to become a police officer... and yet... the moment the great and mighty Réne spoke, our fate was sealed."
"Réne found a way to make the voices quiet," whispered Max, his face white as he stared at Luca. "He can save you all just like he saved me. It’s a good thing to follow Réne."
