Blood Nemesis-Chapter 62: Guarantee
Chapter 62: Guarantee
Achara walked out of the room, leaving only the Thunder Emperor and Oliver inside.
"Gramps, Commander. I have to go home. My family might be looking for me. I lost my phone, and I can’t contact them." Oliver said.
"No need to worry. We contacted your family and informed them. Oh! I also heard from your family that you wish to join the military."
The thunder emperor wore a sly smile when he said the last part.
"Oh! I never said that. You might have misheard."
"I might be old, but I am not deaf."
"I’ve heard that thunder in close proximity can burst eardrums." He made a snarky remark.
"I’ve heard you plan not to attend college and join the military."
"Your condition is more severe than expected. You should get your ears checked." Oliver comfortably leaned on the chair and said.
His avoidant attitude forced the Thunder Emperor to stand up. He calmly walked to Oliver and grabbed his shoulder before he could respond.
"Do you really want to do this?" He asked.
"What?"
"You are avoiding my questions."
"I am not."
"That’s a lie."
"I do not lie."
"..." The Thunder Emperor sighed.
He judged that Oliver seemed to have trust issues. Every word he spoke was pointed and snarky, mostly to avoid questions, and the remaining times to share information that would benefit him.
He was acting like a seasoned politician.
So, he decided to flip the script.
"You don’t trust me. I get it. So, you don’t want to work for me. I understand.
How about we make changes to the terms of our cooperation? Instead of you working for me, I can work for you." He said with a smile.
The reason he was going this far was because of the importance Oliver would play in his plans.
Although total cooperation was out of the question, if he could at least nudge him closer to becoming part of his team, it would be a success.
"What do you mean?" Oliver squinted his eyes and asked.
"I meant what I said. I can work for you, just like now. And the added benefit is that I can provide safety and security not just to you, but to your entire family."
When it came to family, Oliver was a sucker.
When the Thunder Emperor guaranteed safety for his family, his mind swayed.
"..." Oliver stayed silent, pondering.
The Thunder Emperor didn’t miss the chance. He realised that Oliver truly cared about his family. And that care could help him make a deal.
"I won’t interfere with your other activities as long as you work for me. Military law won’t be enforced on you." He suggested.
"Maybe you can decide after hearing about your work." He added.
Slowly, the Thunder Emperor kept nudging him to join his team.
*Sigh*
"What is it?" Finally, Oliver caved in and asked.
The Thunder Emperor smiled. He was partially successful in convincing him.
"I want you to join the hero academy as an undercover agent to find the demons."
"That’s it?"
"Yes."
"Is lethal force allowed?"
"Only against demons."
"I can get by with that," Oliver muttered.
In his last life, Oliver was a lone wolf. The majority of his time was spent hiding from his enemies or using guerilla warfare tactics.
Only in the latter half of his life did he build friendships.
However, by that time, his enemies had grown stronger and he missed the perfect chance to counter attack.
However, in this life, he didn’t plan to repeat the same mistake.
Although he was practically unkillable, there were things more important than his life in the world.
To protect them, he needs allies that he can truly trust.
The Thunder Emperor was a possible candidate for a trustworthy ally. At the same time, he was strong enough to help him in almost all situations.
Oliver didn’t want to miss this chance.
He had already given enough concessions. Working with him now would not be that bad.
"Then, let’s shake hands on it, Commander Gramps." Oliver stood up and extended his hand.
"Great!" The Thunder Emperor happily shook his hand.
Although he was called Gramps, he was not in a state to care about that. He was overjoyed when Oliver joined them.
The demon hunter squad he was forming was a specialized wing that would act independently from the military. They are supposed to handle dangerous missions pertaining to demon elimination.
So, he needed competent people to work for him.
Oliver had shown his competence multiple times in the past. So, he was a good choice for the team.
For example, the documents he emailed had the detailed location of demons working with M-fresh and the possible moves they might be making in the future.
It also contained information about the corrupt affiliates and even the possible places the smuggled Void stone might be stored.
While he couldn’t entirely trust the data, the fact that he could make a document like that spoke volumes about his competence.
Besides that, he could see the growth potential of Oliver.
While the majority of people would consider his inability to use mana a weakness, he saw it as a strength.
As a person standing at the peak of human achievement, he could glimpse into the possibilities of the future.
And an oddity like Oliver, who could use superhuman ability without mana, was certainly someone important, he judged.
"Now, could you tell me about the other person you sent the info to?" The Thunder Emperor asked.
"Nova Rift, Indra. He partially owns M-Fresh. You should keep a close watch on him." Oliver left it at that. He didn’t need to speak more because the man he was speaking to was capable of finding the other information on his own.
"Hm. Okay."
"Then, can I leave?" Oliver asked.
"Not yet. You have to clear one more doubt of mine."
"What is it?"
"The Tempus Cult incident. Did you have something to do with it?"
"I didn’t." Oliver lied without batting an eyelid.
"I hope so..." The aged voice of the Thunder Emperor, now Oliver’s commander, trailed off.
"Can you drop me off near my house?" Oliver asked.
"In the Behemoth?"
"Can you?"
"Ha ha ha... I can."
After a short while, the large airship flew towards Oliver’s house a couple of kilometres away.
The Thunder Emperor was one of the few people who could use a Behemoth like that.
