Chapter 71: Sister 1

Oliver walked out of the SMB office with Leon.

A few seconds ago, Leon had asked to prove if he could keep his word.

Naive as he may be, Leon was not stupid enough to believe everything Oliver told without proof.

Thus, Oliver was in the process of proving he was wealthy. And the method he chose was the simplest of them all.

The reason Leon was hard pressed for money was because of his sister’s condition.

Leon’s sister was in a coma.

Each week, he would have to spend a lot of money on hospital bills just to support her.

Oliver decided that it would be better if he showed he could pay the hospital bills. That way, he could show he had the money and at the same time distance Leon from Chen.

Oliver didn’t ask Leon to sign any documents for the money he was lending, so he immediately agreed.

Thus, both of them were going to the hospital where she was.

Meanwhile, Oliver converted some of his cryptocurrency to creds through an online service.

The total debt Leon incurred was about three hundred and fifty thousand creds. Oliver debited four hundred thousand just to be safe.

He was currently a registered superhuman, so the amount was not large enough to flag as a suspicious transaction.

*Buzz*

Immediately, his phone notification buzzed as his banking app showed the amount credited to his account.

A short while later, Oliver and Leon walked into one of the largest hospitals in the city, The Unity Hospital.

It was a government hospital jointly funded by both the Hero Union and the Hunter Association to provide affordable treatment to all.

"I can understand why your debt wasn’t in the millions," Oliver muttered as he raised his head to look at the large hospital building.

The building was more than twenty stories high and was spread out over a large area. It was impossible to see both ends of the building at a single glance.

"Unity Hospital provides the best treatment for the money." Oliver nodded.

The hospital’s mission was to provide affordable treatment. And it does so by subsidizing their service through donations and external funds.

Adding to it, the medical institute attached to it and research done on innovative treatment methods, along with their patented technology, all worked in tandem to allow the smooth operation of the hospital.

It was a good idea to admit his sister there.

Oliver was satisfied.

Humanity as a whole suffered a huge blow when the initial gates opened across the planet.

At that time, they were unequipped to handle the monster and the mana beast that rushed out.

As a result, more than half the world’s population died during the next few years. From ten billion, it shrank to just over five billion.

It was a catastrophic blow.

There was a time in history when they thought the world would come to an end.

Fortunately, it didn’t.

When the world was in chaos, the superhumans appeared, standing against the barrage of monsters ravaging the planet.

Finally, humans reorganized themselves around large cities to protect themselves.

Still, not everyone was safe.

Monsters, mana beasts, and mutant creatures all roam the planet. Even now, occasional gates open up, scattering monsters here and there. Both superhumans and humans would occasionally get injured during these incidents.

So, in this world where dangers lurk at every corner, medical technology had to rapidly improve.

Everyone agreed that human life was important.

Half the population of the world had died. They couldn’t bear any more losses.

Thus, the government was keen on doing everything in its power to provide affordable medical care.

Unity Hospital was established to serve this mission.

"Where do I pay?" Oliver asked.

"At the counter over there." Leon pointed at the billing counter and led the way.

"Okay."

Soon, they reached the counter.

Leon took care of the formalities and handed over the bill to Oliver.

"542 creds!" Oliver was surprised.

The amount was lower than he expected. Still, he scanned the QR code on the bill and completed the payment.

As expected, the treatment cost at The Unity Hospital was low.

542 creds per week was not an amount a normal person could pay. Even a normal person earns about seven to eight hundred creds per week.

So, Oliver was confused how Leon had raked up a debt of about 300,000 creds.

What kind of work injury did she sustain? He became curious.

"You are visiting her, right?" Oliver asked Leon, who was blankly staring at the hospital bill.

"Yes!"

Leon snapped out of his thoughts and led Oliver into the room where his sister was.

While they were going up the lift, Oliver asked, "What was your sister’s job?"

"Why are you asking that?"

"Just wanted to know how she was injured."

"Um! My sister was a hunter with tracking ability." Leon paused.

"..."

Oliver waited, seeing that he was recalling something traumatic.

"They say that during her last mission, she and her team came across a high-ranked monster and were wiped out."

"You don’t believe it, do you?"

Oliver could see the doubt in Leon’s words.

"I don’t."

"Why?"

"My sister was the best tracker, she would never lead her team into a dangerous situation. And monsters were the easiest to track because of the destruction they leave behind. She would have known if a monster was nearby."

"Hm..." Oliver nodded. "How long has it been since she was injured?" He asked another question.

"Almost a year now."

"That’s 52 multiplied by 500 creds. 26,000 cred would be the amount you had to pay. The initial payment could have been a lot. But that still wouldn’t have bankrupted a superhuman." Oliver said and gave him an inquisitive look.

*Sigh*

"We had other debts. My sister paid off all of it, and we were living without any savings. Even though she was a hunter, she was barely making ends meet."

"Insurance?"

"Didn’t receive any money from them. And I was not in a position to fight them. I meant, legally."

"Hm... I understand." Oliver was convinced. "So you had to borrow money from Chen. It makes sense." Oliver nodded.

"Yes."

"How much did you borrow?"

"Fifty thousand creds."

"Fifty thousand!" Oliver was shocked.

If what he was hearing is true, the debt had skyrocketed during that one year.

"He ripped you off good," Oliver muttered.

Leon had nothing to say against that. He knew he was being ripped off and still borrowed money because of his desperate situation.
