Chapter 97: Gold

The golden glow was the result of viscous mana seeping through all the cells in his body. For those who looked at him from the outside, he looked like he was entirely covered in a golden sheen, glowing brightly.

However, lost in the unfamiliar agony, Oliver was oblivious to the reactions of those around him. For the first time since he could remember, genuine pain consumed him. His face contorted in a fierce grimace as raw mana ripped through his body, tearing apart blood vessels, nerves, and cell walls from within. And the reason for that was the oversaturation of mana in his body, deliberately made to increase his body’s mana sensitivity.

’I expected this to happen, even then...’ Oliver’s eyes watered as a stinging pain assaulted all his nerves. ’...But this is more painful than expected.’

Oliver’s body was not used to mana. He could barely saturate it with a couple of hundred units before the mana went out of control and ripped his body apart. So, he was always cautious when he used this ability, always limiting it, even though it could quickly increase his mana sensitivity and quantity.

And the reason for doing so came down to one single fact: The availability of blood.

In the city, he couldn’t get his hands on a large amount of blood without arousing suspicion. As a criminal hiding from law enforcement after eliminating the Tempus Cult, he couldn’t use special means to get his hands on the blood, making it obvious that he was the one they were searching for.

Thus, improving his mana sensitivity was put on hold. However, that changed today when Oliver bathed in blood.

All around him were creatures, mana beasts that he and others had slain. For once, he had all the blood he needed.

So, in his usual craziness, he absorbed a lot of blood into his blood sac and converted it to mana.

Initially, he danced around his body’s limit, only saturating it with about a hundred to three hundred units of mana, just enough to maintain the balance of healing and injury. It was a good idea. But after a while, he hit the limit on his blood sac, filling it up entirely.

This made him crazier, and a bold idea came to his mind.

What if I convert more blood to mana?

More than ten thousand Poison Arrow Frogs had died. There still existed a pool of blood near the mechs, and he had enough blood in his sac to heal him if something went wrong.

The thought became the focal point that culminated in everything that happened next.

Instead of wasting any more time, Oliver immediately sent a thousand units of mana into the golden coin spinning in his body. The blood disappeared into it as if a blackhole had swallowed it.

Immediately, a torrent of golden mana flowed out and into Oliver’s body. It was far beyond what his body could handle. Soon, a bone-biting pain began to assault him.

Usually, he could have used blood to block off and cut certain nerves when he sustained heavy injuries to alleviate his pain. But the pain from the mana was coming from all over, stunning him for a second.

Distracted by the pain, Oliver missed several swings, allowing the frogs to puncture his skin and inject their poison.

But he had no time to care about that. Immediately, he utilised the remaining blood in his blood sac to heal himself. The destruction the mana caused in his body was greater than the rate at which he was healing.

Thus, a battle between the destructive force of the mana and the healing power of blood occurred inside his body. Any mistake he makes right now might send him back to the freezer in Grizzly’s basement.

Taking a moment to reorient himself, Oliver bit down on his lips and lifted his head.

"Fuck pain." He said with a deep frown.

When his entire body felt like it was falling apart, he took a step forward.

’I will heal faster than it could wound me.’ He said in his mind and took another step forward.

Oliver was not the kind of person who would give up in front of insurmountable opposition. And besides that, he was the reason for his pain. No one asked him to use mana. The decision was his own. And he couldn’t just give up on a decision he made.

He was a stubborn guy.

Without caring about anything else, He took another step forward and swung the sword.

The radiating golden mana around him coalesced into a thin line over the sword, bending to his unbreakable will.

Power, like he had never felt, rushed through his arms as he slashed the few Poison Arrow Frogs nearby.

Instantly, the frogs were split in two, their internal organs spilling out.

Although the pain was unbearable, the power coursing through his body rejuvenated his mind. Oliver felt the world change around him.

His movements became faster, and his body became sturdier. Soon, he was moving through the battlefield like a golden beam of light, slashing and killing all the enemies he could get his hands on.

Meanwhile, he absorbed more and more blood to heal his body.

Mid-battle, after killing a few hundred frogs, he doubted whether he was really alive or if it was all a dream.

What he did was not something a person with just a thousand mana could do.

The thought began to haunt him once sanity returned to his eyes. freēwēbηovel.c૦m

The mana was different from the usual. It was more potent, efficient, and...unpredictable. There was a madness inside it that suited Oliver just right. Deciding to further investigate it at a later time, Oliver continued to do what he did best–Kill.

Oblivious to Oliver’s inner torment, the onlookers watched as his figure blurred across the battlefield, his expression one of ferocious intensity. None of them could discern the silent grimace hidden beneath the surface, mistaking his pain for savage determination.

It had been a while since the flow of Poison Arrow Frog from the gate decreased. Due to a rampaging monster like Oliver, they were being killed quickly, eliminating further trouble. Even the chainsaw attached to the Mech’s forearm also slowed down, signaling the decrease in intensity of the battle.
