The Kingmaker System-Chapter 127 - 126. Dorm Life (2)
Chapter 127: 126. Dorm Life (2)
Eric and Rune’s dorm life seemed to be giving them a little hard time as they had to do the work they didn’t even know existed.
"What is this?" Eric asked pointing at the scrub as they stood in the kitchen preparing to cook.
"That is a scrub, you use it to wash dishes." Viella explained.
"Wash dishes?"
"Yes, but that comes after you cook and eat so, come here and help us out."
"You have to peel the potatoes like this." Sylvia explained Rune as he stood beside her.
"Make sure you only peel the outer skin or there won’t be much to eat." Rowan said Rune nodded as he started peeling.
"Eek! This fish is alive!" Eric shouted as the fish thrashed at his touch.
"Whoa! Fresh fish!" The kids cheered.
"We got them fresh from the stream!" Cyrus announced.
"Fresh from the stream?" Rune gasped.
"Would you like to learn how to clean and cook the fish?" Sylvia asked Rune.
"I’ll show you." Viella said as she picked up the knives and started explaining it precisely for the two noble kids who never saw how to gut a fish before.
Viella placed the fish down and held a knife to its knife diagonally.
"Now, watch carefully," she said looking at Eric and Rune who stood at her sides as she started explaining.
"First, make a cut across it at an angle right here, below the gill flap and fin to the belly," she pointed as she worked cleanly.
"Then, make a shallow cut from behind its head along the top of its dorsal fin right to the tail." She made the cut as she explained and I sat on the stool watching them.
"Now, skim the knife over the bones so that the top fillet will not have any bones, like this." She said as she carefully sliced through and peeled the top fillet off.
I watched as she carefully explained as she worked along and Eric and Rune watched her attentively like dedicated students.
"Do you get it?" She asked and they nodded.
"So, now let’s have fish fry for lunch, Master will you like that?" Viella asked me and I shrugged my shoulders.
"I’m fine with anything you cook." I said with a smile and they started preparing for cooking.
"Apart from fish, let’s make some pieces for dessert."
"Eh? But I wanted some strawberry cake?"
"How about pie with strawberry jam?"
I watched as the kids excitedly started cooking and Eric and Rune who were the newbies hovered around the younger kids watching and learning.
"I guess, I was worried for nothing." I mumbled.
"The kids are expert in charming others, like their Godfather." Kent commented and I swung my foot from under the table and kicked him in the shin.
"Ow!" He grunted.
"I would have preferred to be titled as their Guardian."
"But they do have your traits." He said and I sighed.
"Anyways, let’s go outside and let them do their work." I said and heard a yelp before turning to see Rune who was shaking his hand.
But before I could move the kids took care of it.
"It’s fine, you learn to work in kitchen by getting hurt like this." Sylvia said as she swiftly placed some ointment on it.
I smiled to myself as I stepped out of the kitchen and went up to the study that was made for me. Some of my work was brought over so that I could finish it while visiting the kids.
I ended up working till Kent came up and called me over for the meal.
I went up to the mess hall and looked at the kids who were serving the food themselves, Eric and Rune didn’t know that it was self-serving place for everyone.
I picked up my plate and placed whatever I wanted on it before I sat down at the head of the table.
We started eating after everyone had gathered and the kids started chattering amongst themselves while I looked at Eric and Rune who were sitting close by.
"So, how was your first day at cooking?" I asked.
"I never knew our chef and maids took so much efforts to prepare meals for us." Rune said.
"I had no idea that soup needs so much stirring." Eric said and I chuckled.
"Don’t worry, you’ll learn with time."
"Do you know how to cook, Re-Master?" Rune asked.
"Hm? Yes, but I can only cook simple dishes not something like this." I said pointing at the fish fry.
"When did you learn it?" Rune gasped.
"Well... I learned by watching the maids." I lied.
"Then have you ever made something for someone?" Eric asked and I was about to open my mouth to say no but then I recalled a certain amethyst eyed child.
Rune looked at me and Eric raised his brows.
"You have?" He gasped.
"For who?" Rune asked.
"Myself." I answered with a smile.
"Ah, I wish I could taste Master’s cooking."
"I wish so too."
"It was only a sandwich."
"Still!"
The lunch ended soon enough and after that the kids after a little warm-up were out in the training ground.
I watched them for a while before I returned to the Ryujin mansion.
Enora greeted me as I returned and we straight to my study where I saw the envelope which I was about to chuck into the fire as I always did with the invitations but the seal made me stop.
It was from Frosthail.
I opened the envelope and saw the elegant handwriting adorning the paper.
Dear Ocean Ryujin,
How are you? I hope you are well and healthy, we are happy and healthy thanks to you.
I know you might not send a reply but I should do at least this much to apologise for misunderstanding and accusing you. I heard from my parents that you were there at Mordino to rescue them because of the promise you made to me.
I have no words to express my gratitude for what you did for me and my family, Sir Ocean.
I know no excuses will justify my behaviour but if it means anything to you then, please accept my apology.
There are a lot of things that I wish to say to you and thank you for everything that you did for me.
Thank you for giving me hope when everyone around me had given up. Thank you for protecting Frosthail. Thank you for saving my life. Thank you for befriending me when I was all alone and standing by my side throughout.
Thank you for reuniting me with my family. Thank you for saving their lives and doing the things for me that you didn’t even let me know of.
Mother told me that you persuaded the nobles to support my inheritance and also to protect me from the assassination attempts. I had no idea that despite everything you had gone out of your way for me.
At first, I thought you were only a wandering mage and you never told me your full name so, I had no idea that you were a Baron. I am hoping that we would run into each other when I visit the capital and that you wouldn’t avoid me at that time.
I saw you at Mordino when you had rescued my father but before I could reach you, you had left. Father told me that you cured him and regenerated his lost limbs. He said we were fortunate enough to be saved by a Dragon.
I sincerely apologise for judging you based on my prejudices.
I don’t know if I’m still worthy of it but, please forgive me for disrespecting you and saying all those things to you.
I hope I hear from you someday.
Yours sincerely,
Davian Frosthail.
I sighed and folded the paper placing it back in the envelope and looked at the cool fireplace before releasing a deep sigh. I opened the drawer and put the envelope in there before I leaned back in my seat.
It had been months since I last saw him but while reading the letter I could hear his voice in my head speaking the words from the letter.
I had done everything I could there just so that a kid wouldn’t suffer while his parents were missing. It was a tough thing already that he had to take up the huge responsibility of maintaining a large territory but apart from that he had to take care of the internal battles as well.
Still, I was glad that my work there was done, I didn’t have to worry about Davian now, he had his parents to take care of him.
My focus was now on the war that was going on between Denril and Sestia and even before that, the deal that was to be made with Mordino regarding the Magic Gate.
I hadn’t heard from Miri after I left, although I received the news regularly but I wondered how she was holding up now. She had to shoulder the responsibility of the kingdom
It was easy to say this in a story that the child aging 13 or 14 had to go through hardships but this meagre sentence couldn’t ever interpret the suffering and pain that the child goes through.
I just hoped that the lives that I had touched wouldn’t be suffering now.
The elves and the dwarves, Eric, Lady Elise, Davian, Miri and probably more to come.
