Chapter 93: 92. Promises To Keep (1)

[Warning: Overuse of Mana detected.]

The surprised voices resounded around me and I couldn’t help but feel my ears starting to ring and the pain starting to twist in my chest.

"But, why can’t I see anything?"

"I can’t see anything too!"

"Our eyes... Our eyes weren’t healed?"

The place was drowned in pitch black darkness so, it was obvious that they couldn’t see anything.

I turned off the invisibility spell and activated my wings. The glow of the angel wings lot up every corner of the hellish prison cells bringing all those who were inside to cover their eyes.

"Wha-What is that light?"

"Ugh, my eyes!"

"Wait, I can see!"

"We don’t have time!" I spoke up making them all look at me.

"A-Angel!"

"It’s an angel!"

"Did we die?!"

"Is this heaven?!"

"It’s not!" I snapped feeling myself away a little.

"Wh-Who are you?"

"Step away from the bars." I ordered.

"What?"

"Do as he says! He’s here to help us!" A voice shouted and the men quickly stepped away from the bars and I casted the water slicers and shot them all around me.

The iron bars were sliced away cleanly and I could hear the gasps and shocked exclamations of the ones inside.

"Hurry and get out!" I commanded making them step out.

"Whoa... I didn’t expect an angel to descend to help us!"

"God has finally heard us!"

"But, how do we get out of here?"

"Was the Tyrant killed?"

I didn’t answer any of their questions as my eyes and chest seemed like they were on fire.

[Warning: Overuse of Supreme Healing spell has taken a toll on the Host’s body.]

The notification popped up and I breathed through my mouth before walking up to the wall which I had noticed a while ago.

I focused my mana in my fist before I punched the wall with all my might and the wall shattered revealing a tunnel.

My mana eyes caught this escape route, Salem might be a reckless seeming Tyrant but he was a schemer. He had manipulated and used people to get where he was today so, having a few escape routes all over the place wasn’t a surprising thing.

Besides, this route was connected to the sewer system that went straight to the outskirts of the capital.

"Whoa... An escape route!"

"We’re free!"

I could hear them cheering up but apart from the normal people I couldn’t sense Alarice anywhere.

"Is there... Any other prison apart from this one?" I asked looking back at the men who were drenched in blood and dirt.

"Uh... I don’t think there was anything as worse as this."

"There was only one but it’s on the upper level."

"Do you know if there was any foreigner held here?" I asked.

"Foreigner?"

"I don’t..."

"There was." One of them spoke up.

"Where is he?"

"I... I don’t know. But I heard them taking someone away just a few hours ago."

Alarice was shifted!

"Damn..." I growled.

The men in front of me seemed hesitant and bewildered as it was so, I gestured towards the tunnel.

"This... tunnel..." I was finding it hard to breath and my heart seemed to be twisting in my chest with every breath.

"It will... take your out... Go."

"And what about you?"

"I... I... have... to find... him." I wheezed feeling my chest growing tighter.

"But you don’t seem well, come with us."

I waved my hand dismissively and gestured them to leave before I staggered ahead towards the way I had come from but my body seemed as if it was starting to lose strength.

There was a sharp pain in my chest which made me feel as though I had taken a bullet again. I gritted my teeth as the pain grew even more before I felt my wings disappearing and everything in front of my eyes grew black.

I vaguely heard the sounds around me before I lost my senses and when I opened my eyes I found myself in a white gazebo which was nestled in a lush green garden. It seemed like a serene place with the birds chirping and the mellow scent of the flowers drifting in the air.

"Did I die again?" I wondered as I found myself sitting in a chair in the center of the gazebo with a table filled with snacks and steaming teacup.

There was no way I would be experiencing such peace while being alive, at least, not with the war right in my hands.

"Damn..." I mumbled as I picked up the teacup taking a small sip of the refreshing drink.

Well, if I did die then my dear Patrons must already be looking for another candidate to fill the space and turning the wheel of time.

Finally, I could immerse myself into the embrace of nothingness.

"You don’t seem fazed." A feminine voice asked and I looked around but there was no one else other than myself.

"Death isn’t new to me anymore." I replied.

"A human like you is rare."

"Is that a compliment?" I asked picking up the fork and sliced through the strawberry cake in front of me.

"It is." I chuckled.

"Thank you and also for the tea and cakes. They taste good."

"I’m glad."

"Are you God?" I asked.

"No."

"Am I dead?"

"Not yet."

"Drat." I grumbled.

"Do you want to die?"

"No comments over that, but if I’m not dead then I’m wasting time here." I placed my fork down.

"Your body is still weak considering the amount of mana you used, Reina."

"I know, now please send me back." I said as I finished my tea and stood up.

"I still have no idea of what I should think of you. You are an honorable person but, if you throw your life off at every time then at one point you might not be able to return."

"Life and death aren’t in the hands of mere mortals, right?" I asked as I walked over and stood at the entrance of the gazebo.

"Do you want my help?"

"I don’t accept help from strangers."

There was a sound of soft chuckle and I couldn’t help but feel as though someone had appeared behind me.

"I am not a stranger though."

I didn’t turn to see who it was as I had other things to do. I could figure out or ask my Patrons of this place later.

"Still, I need to go back. There are people relying on me and there are promises that I have to keep."

"Very well then, I shall send you back."

"Thank you."

"Call for me anytime, Reina. You protected my children so, I shall protect what is dear to you as well."

I nodded before I saw the portal opening in front of me.

"May fortune favour you and your endeavours achieve success." I heard her blessing before I leapt into the portal.

My eyes flew open and I inhaled loudly feeling my mana sear through my body like sizzling hot water. I gritted my teeth and grunted clutching my chest where it still hurt.

"Holy smokes!"

"Wa-Water." I coughed feeling as if I had swallowed a truckload of sand.

I was handed a glass of water and I took it gulping it all in one go before feeling my mana slowly stabilizing.

I looked around and saw three familiar faces looking at me with the mixed expressions of worry, shock and relief. It seemed like an small room with no proper lighting and dusty air.

"Where am I?" I asked as I sat up.

"Are you... feeling all right, Master Ocean?" Eikir asked sounding perplexed as he stared at me.

"Yes..." I said as I let my feet down from the bed where I lay.

There wasn’t any blood or dirt stuck to my body as I had expected since I had walked right over the carnage that was sprawling all around in the lower level cells.

The realisation hit me with a pain worse than I was in earlier and I couldn’t face Lady Dahlia.

I had failed her, I couldn’t find or rescue Alarice like I had promised her.

"I’m sorry," I said bowing my head to her and she reached out and placed her hand over my shoulder.

"It’s all right. You kept your promise of rescuing those who were trapped in that hell." Her voice didn’t carry the pain that I knew she was feeling from within. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

"But... what happened?" I asked and looked at the Hael and Eikir who stared at me as if I was some sort of an alien.

"What kind of monster are you? Or wait, are you really an angel?" Hael asked while Lady Dahlia stood silently.

"What?"

"The people who were trapped in the lower level cells brought you back. They told us you’re an angel or something and that your had glowing white wings and you healed them and even had their lost limbs and lost eyes regenerated." He said and then looked at Lady Dahlia.

"Well, we know you could revive the lost body parts and heal people but, how could you resurrect yourself?" He asked and I failed to under the last part.

"Resurrect myself?"

"Your heart... had stopped." Eikir added and I touched my chest where my heart was still beating and my mana was slowly starting to recover my body.

Just as the notifications popped I could feel my mana fusing and expanding within my body and my heart beats growing even stronger.

"It was a miracle that you woke up... We were going to go ahead with the war but with you awake now, I think we could still make it in time." Hael said and I frowned.

"Wait, how long was I out?" I asked.

"You’ve been sleeping for one and a half day." Lady Dahlia answered and I cursed under my breath as I had lost a lot of time.

"What’s the status of the Sestian army?" I asked.

"They have arrived and are currently fighting with the Tyrant’s army."

"What about your Army?"

"We are moving just as you had instructed."

I ran my hand through my hair feeling slightly frustrated.

"I was the one who screwed up then, right?" I spoke.

"It’s fine, we still have time." Lady Dahlia assured me.

"Yes, the Beast hasn’t left his lair, it’s only his army that has engaged with the Sestian army at the outskirts and with our army inside the borders." Hael reported and I nodded.

"So, what are we going to do now?" Lady Dahlia asked.

"Plan B." I announced.

"You all take positions, I will go and see the Beast myself."
